Default Problems starting 93’ XJ6

I know this said up to the year 92, not sure which other forum to post this in though. We have a 1993 Jaguar XJ6 that will not start or crank. When you first insert the key, the lights come on, but as soon as you turn it the lights go off. All accessory features work such as the sunroof, windows, power seats, etc. The battery is definitely charged. It sounds like the fuel pump is engaging. The starter is not engaging. The car phone turns on and says “Locked”. No lights on dash. Doesn’t even click when you crank it. Radio hasn’t worked well since we bought it, we’ve been “locked out” of that for the most part.
We just replaced the gas tank and lines, had like 2 good drives where everything seemed fine, then tried to start it today and this started happening.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi MP2809,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

I have moved your thread to the forum for the XJ40, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 1993 XJ6.

By far, the most common cause of a no-crank condition in a Jaguar is a weak battery. Jaguars require very healthy batteries due to all of the computer modules and other electronic consumers. Some auto parts stores have good battery analyzers and can tell you how the battery's current capacity compares to its rating. A battery can power the lights, sunroof, windows, door locks, etc., but not be capable of providing sufficient current to rotate the starter motor.

Another possible suspect is the starter itself. They can fail suddenly. Another situation is that if the battery is weak, the starter gear can become jammed against the flexplate ring gear but the starter motor won't have enough power to rotate the engine.

Another possible contributor to your symptoms is corrosion on the various battery power and ground connections between the battery in the trunk and the starter and alternator in the engine bay. It can help to correct or forestall various electrical gremlins to clean the battery cable terminals, the battery negative cable ground point on the body, the false bulkhead connection on the engine bay side of the firewall, the connections at the starter and alternator, and both ends of the engine ground strap. Even slight corrosion on each of these connections is cumulative and can cause a significant reduction in battery charging voltage and a significant increase in current required to rotate the starter motor.

There are other possible causes of your symptoms, but the above are the most common.

Regarding the radio, you probably need the four-digit security code. Originally, the code was written on a small card that was included with the Driver's Handbook and other literature that came with the vehicle. Some owners would write the code somewhere in the Driver's Handbook. If you can't find the code in your paperwork, a nice woman named Paula Jayne at the xj40.com forum discovered this method for restoring radio function:

To recode the Jag Alpine Radio AJ 9200 R the onboard jumpers (they can be seen hidden under the label - run your finger over the label and push the soft spot, this will create an oblong hole) need to be changed.

They need to be all bridged - so out with a small soldering iron and a small cross point driver.

First remove the top cover to reveal the cassette deck. There are two screws that need to be removed before removing the other side; they match up to very obvious points on the base cover.

Once they are out remove the four base cover screws and then the cover.

Identify the jumpers that were visible through the hole and solder any unsoldered pairs.

Check with a multi-meter after soldering.

Reassemble - put in car and when CODE is requested enter 6543 - Radio should now go.

Cheers,

Don
