recognizing aj6 4.0l engines
Hi,
For my next project I'd like to use the aj6 4.0l engine from a xj40.
How can I tell that the block I'm looking at when at a breakers yard is actualy a 4.0l and not a 3.6l and 3.2l ?
Are there any significant differences on the outside of the engine (apart from the 4.0 badge, which can easily be replaced)?
If anyone could help me, I'd really appreciate it
greets,

The exact engine version is identifiable through the engine number.
The second character of the engine number gives its displacement. If I remember right,
A=2.9 (sohc),
B=3.2,
C=6.0 V12,
D=3.6,
E=4.0
As a quick guide if the engine is still in the car, the 3.2 and 3.6 engines use a transmission cable attached to the throttle coupling on top of the throttle body, whilst the 4.0 transmission uses electronics so has no cable there.
This site includes an engine number decoder, though you will need access to the internet in the breakers yard to input the numbers!!

Hope this helps,
