If you have the rear pivot bolts installed and are trying to swing the subframe up to attach the Vee mounts, I had the same problem. I substituted 1/4" ratchet extensions for the bolts to give the subframe a little wiggle room so I could get the Vee mounts in position, then replaced the extensions with the bolts. You really do not want to change the orientation of the rear pivot bushes. The photos at the link below may help:

Don ive tried that getting wriggle room by putting in substitutes to the bolts. This enabled me to get the v mounts in position and partially bolted up. The problem them reverts back to the rear mounts which are "half a bolt hole" out. Did you have that problem and how did you resolve it? Mick

Done it...phew...thanks for all the feedback and help. Got the v mounts in and done up, but not tight. probably only half a centimetre to move the eye of the bush to make it line up, so lifted the arm with a jack and dragged it down and forward with a crowbar hooked into the edge of the bush, and levering on the body of the car. Will try and post a pic. Lined up with little fuss, bolt in and hey presto. Other side harder but to my suprise same thing .

Now my only issue is the engine is a tad low, fan rubbing on radiator shroud. Any solutions for that? Mick

Hi mickvic,

Sorry I wasn't able to respond yesterday but I'm glad you got it done!

Is it possible that rather than the engine sitting low, the body is sitting high and needs to settle down, or that the Vee mounts are not actually fully seated?

Curious...

Don

The v mounts look well and truly seated, the new rubber will make the body sit a fraction higher I suppose.... gearbox mount have any influence here?? It may well be quite old, the car has done 340,000km it could be origonal im sure the v mounts were. The pass side was badly split and the drivers side was soggy with oil. Hmm . See what shes like when I set her down on the wheels.

Got one s

pring back in without the ******* taking my head off...phew. The spring pan bolts take a little lining up and you have to be careful not to cross thread them. Used the same bolts cleaned up and with lock tight against all instructions!!! I didnt paint the spring just cleaned it and sprayed it with fish oil

By the way my springs have a daub of red paint all down one side on each coil, what does that mean?

mickvic,

The tip many of us have used to line up the spring pan is a pair of threaded rod sections about 8 inches long threaded into the inner spring pan bolt holes to guide the pan into position as the spring is compressed. See the last photo in the album at the link below:

thanks don yes i did use that method , and your illustrations have proven very useful, thankyou. Just cleaning up the hubs etc then get the rack back on the sway bar and the discs and hubs, plus the afm which I had to remove to get at the upper crossmember bolts.

The paint is a factory color code for the spring rate and possibly the ride height. The springs on sports models had a different color code from the regular "comfort" springs used on the other models, and of course the 12-cylinder cars got different springs. I can't recall the details, but somewhere in the Jag-Lovers archive there's an explanation of the color codes.

Cheers,

Don
