Hi all, bear with me please as I don't have any manuals yet (in the post!) but I can't for the lift of me figure out how to remove the throttle body for cleaning. I can see the bolts but cannot reach them with a socket or spanner, even using a universal joint. Does the entire manifold have to come off or the post which attached the throttle cables? It's an 89 3.6 xj40.
Managed to get it off with much swearing, the lower bolts were so caked in gunk I couldn't even feel them, let alone get a socket on. Luckily it did come off because it was pretty much blocked, which explains the rubbish idle. Now to figure out why it was so rich. Thanks again!
Don't you love how they engineered this 4.0 engine I have a 93, You may need to remove the intake manifold. There is a very short coolant hose underneath the intake manifold, it requires removing the intake to replace, same type of scenario your up against. Your throttle body is configured different than the 93 4.0. After looking more carefully at the photo, try removing those brass looking bolts off the face, then remove the face. I think you could with an extension and socket get to it.
Not to second guess Don, but I always just take that front horn section off first. It makes reaching the mount bolts much easier for me.
You can definitely remove the throttle body trumpet, but if you do, best practice would be to replace the gasket, part 2 in the diagram. Even a small air leak at that point could contribute to lean running.
Unfortunately, the gasket is no longer available from Jaguar, so you might have to make a new one from gasket stock, or use oxygen-sensor-safe RTV silicone sealant.
