Default retro airbags

Anyone installed '93 steering wheel and or '94 glovebox with airbags into a 1992 series3? One online seller (used) claims an easy install with no sensor connections, activates by inertia.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I don't see why you couldn't but be careful when disabling the device. If you are going to do it yourself batt disconnected, you will have to make a tool to fit the screw/bolt head so that you can unscrew it to disarm.

DO NOT HAVE YOUR HEAD OR ANY OTHER BIT IN THE FIRING LINE IN FRONT OF THE WHEEL IF IT GOES OFF THE BLAST COULD REMOVE THE OBSTRUCTING BIT!!

If it were me, I would remove the airbag from the wheel and not reinstall it.

How good these things are and how they go off is a mystery to me.

Here is a pic of my 93 bags not deployed.

Thanks for you thoughts. I would like to hear from others on whether '93 or '94 air bags actually deploy; a one seller claims there are no electrical sensors/wires to '93 driver air bags, that it uses a kinetic energy type of sensor that is built into the unit. Anyone know whether XJS had this set-up in '92 and do they interchange?
Thanks again for your time.

Most all airbags require multiple inputs to fire, crush sensors in the front end of the vehicle, and inertia switch of sorts. It will need to get input from both to fire, otherwise it could go off under hard braking with a pot hole involved. There are going to be more parts involved than simply the airbag.

Shelby676,

I can't tell you anything about a '94 passenger-side airbag because our '93 doesn't have one, but it does have the steering wheel airbag, which is mechaically-activated (there are no electrical connections to the airbag). The photos at the link below show how I deactivated the airbag and removed it in order to renovate our steering wheel. The second and third albums show the steering wheel renovation and horn button replacement for anyone interested:

By the way, jaguarmerriamparts.com shows the airbag modules still available, though at steep prices:

Steering wheel airbag module part number HMB9180BBLEG, $446.62

Passenger airbag module part number HMD9654BC, $1,699.43

Please keep us informed on your project!

Cheers,

Don

I have cooled down on considering a retro fit. Looked at the site where I found the manual pages: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...94-xjs-138969/ there were shown a car with severe front end damage and had not activated or deployed its bags. The inertia method of activation of the bag seems antiquated. The next reason is the bags have reached and passed their expiration dates. The installation danger and lastly the cost. Also in my consideration was my personal exposure since I do not drive the car daily and rarely have a passenger. I also think that Jaguar was under the gun to install airbags to meet US standards. Could I personally install the airbag? Yes. Will I? No!
