Default The slow death of my alternator

A few months back I started getting an odd noise on startup that sounded like a slipping belt from my 94 XJ6. It would only do it on a cold start when the brake pump running.

I checked the belts and they were fine and finally managed to get the noise to happen with a stethoscope handy and sure enough the Alternator was screaming like a little girl.

I was going to order an alternator and then the weather changed for the worse and I parked the car for a week and a half and when I went to bring it in to work the noise had gone away.

A few days ago I noticed the car stopped charging at idle when it was cold but fixed itself when it warmed up. But I knew the end was near so new Alternator on the way.

Found a Reman Denso for $135. I wuld have tried some new brushes first but I have a feeling a bearing is going as well. Funny thing I looked at the V12's Alt for a pricing comparison and thought they look the same in the picture it double the cost, and list is over a $1K

Ill drop it in on Tues after work, it doesn't look to bad.

Sorry for not getting back. It was an easy install and it fixed the issues. Nice charge and bright lights even at idle.

I think the air pump is slipping with the clutch engaged now (causing a slight squeal on startup), and may have to see if the air gap is adjustable.

But thats for another day as its been snowing and my XJ is parked until the melt. It might get down the hill to work but not back up.

Jeh,

Thanks for reporting back.

You avatar photo is so small that I can't really tell. Out of curiosity, what's that barrel we're staring down? Is it a 1911 of some kind? :-)

Cheers,

Don

I've heard good things about the show - some of my friends are addicted. I've heard good things about the 4506 too, but have not yet shot one.

Happy New Year!

Don
