Steering rack question.
MY 1990 XJ6 still cranks but won’t start. Replaced pretty much everything.
Also, is the steering rack on the 1990 XJ6 compatible with any other jaguar types? Say 2002 XJ8?

For your no start, search this forum for crank position sensor, theres been a lot of that going around lately. As far as the steering rack goes, I think 90-92 are the same, 93 and 94 will work but theres a different plug electrical plug on it (as I recall). 95 on I would recommend going to Jaguar Heritage (or Rock auto) and comparing part numbers. Good luck!
Hi Chris,
Regarding the no-start issue, please give us an update as to the things you have tried from all the suggestions you received in your thread on that topic. Please keep all posts on that issue together in that thread to avoid confusion among other members who are trying to help:

Regarding the steering rack, Jerry's suggestion that you check jaguarclassicparts.com for part numbers is the best place to start. I don't know if the rack from a '93-'94 will work - there is no electrical connector on any XJ40 rack and I believe the mounting points are the same, but the lower steering columns were changed in '93 so the racks may not be compatible with earlier columns.
As far as the later racks go, I think the racks for the X300 (XJ6 1995-97) share the same mounting points, but they have ZF's Servotronic system that electronically varies the power assistance according to road speed. Your car does not have the necessary electronic systems to work with those racks.
The racks for the X308 (XJ8 1998-2003) use the Servotronic 2 system, and their mounting points are different, so they won't work in your car either.
Cheers,
Don

Are you running a '96 rack in your '94, and if so, did you have the proper harness electrical connector?
Cheers,

Sorry for digging out that old thread, but my question is related to the topic.
I'm a little confused because another XJ81 owner claimed to me he has a servotronic in his car by factory and that this was standard. I'm pretty sure that I do not have the necessary socket plug on the steering rack nor a corresponding wiring harness on my car. So I am wondering if that other owner just fooled me or if servotronic was maybe a factory option on the late 93/94 models?

I think you'll find that if you check the parts catalog, the racks on XJ40/81 models,(late or otherwise) do not have the servotronic system.

Hi V12Lover,
As far as I know, Larry is correct - the Servotronic adaptive-assist steering racks were introduced in the X300 in 1995. The Servotronic control module receives a vehicle speed signal from the instrument pack. The module is built into the steering rack pinion housing. If you don't have an electrical connector on your pinion housing, you don't have a Servotronic rack.
Cheers,
Don
