Stereo's and Rims...
Hi all,
That's right. New guy here, straight to business on the bling. New to this forum anyhow. Have been a frequent poster of many a forum ranging from Audiforums to Vw to Dodge to Ford to, well you name it. Also I've been posting frequently on Jaglovers, a wealth of technical info there! Great resource.
Recently purchased this sweet baby, '91 4.0 Van den Plas (Daimler over here) in mint condition except one small small dent, 150k kilometers on the clock. Black with cream/white leather interior, picnic tables, heated seats the lot:
I am now, after fixing most technical issues (rear suspension, blower motor, elec window, tune-up) at the stage where I am going to 'pimp' this ol' dude. This thing is itchin' for some decent wheels, moderate tint and most importantly; an exquisite stereo
My research thus far hasn't gotten me very far, also for some reason I can't view any of the pics in the photo gallery on this forum.
Anyway I'd like to see who's done what as far as stereo upgrades go. I'm familiar with the wiring and am going to rewire the grounds for my speakers. I'm going to seperately amp whatever I mount under the seats as the head unit I've bought is a four channel as all are today.
I've read a lot about people putting larger speakers in the doors. How? What did you do to solve the issue of clearance or did you just get rid of the old speaker grille and enlarge the hole?
I have a "Daimler" A.K.A. Van den Plas so I have 4" speakers all around stock. I'd like to go 6 or 5 1/4 while retaining the stock look. Ideas/pictures?
Also rims, I think the BMW 5x120 lug pattern rims will fit as the Jag has a 5.120.7mm lug pattern? Experiences and pictures please?
Thanks in advance
New guy-David

Hey David,
Congrats on the 40, she's a beaut! Looks like she's been well taken care of, too. Rims are the only thing I can really help you with, sorry. There aren't many aftermarket rims that look good on the XJ40 in my opinion, but there is one member on here, XJJagXJJeepDriver, who has a good looking set on his. I think they're star shaped, maybe you could ask him about the brand name and whatnot.
One really common upgrade to the XJ40's is a set of "Dimple" style wheels from the X300's. Here's a pic:

I got 4 for mine off of Craigslist for $50 each with tires, then got a spare later, might get 'em chromed at some point. It was one of the first upgrades I made, those tiny wheels that come stock have always made me think of a fat man sitting on a bar stool.
Anyway, good luck, and nice car! [sm=smiley20.gif]

Hey man thanks.
What's that pic in your avatar? Album cover?
She looks well taken care of indeed, a few things here and there but I can't complain. Especially as I paid under a grand for her.
Fat guy, bar stool. Lol, I see what you mean, and here I was convincing myself they look ok.
I hear ya on those 300 wheels, I'm lookin' for a little more 'flava'
I'm in Europe also where things can be found but for a price, I personally really like the look of these I found here in the Netherlands that local parts guy is selling, though these wheels tend apparently to be prone to going eggshaped and for over 1k euros I don't think so! That's more than I payed for the car! But they look sweet though... I believe they came of a later model Coupe or somethin'
They do look hot on that blakc Jag though!!!!
I'm pretty sure you can squeeze a BMW wheel on there, it's only .7mm difference, in the lug pattern. I was thinking a nice fat 5 spoke or the newer M5 10 spoke wheels. I'll find out and post back here.
If anybody has any ideas on above post please don't hesitate...

RE: Stereo's and Rims...
hey whats up man, nice ride and welcome!! This is pics of mine below. Ive had her 4 long years and has taken me 3 to get her where I wanted and everything Ive done to it. It has 17" chrome wheels, 20% tint all the way around, and an Alpine Sound System which sounds perfect...not obnoxious base but it's there... Alpine head unit and CD changer so it works as a factory CD changer connected (7 cds total) and of course the (2) 12" Alpine Type-E Subs and amp in trunk. System ran me 700 dollars. Ive had the rims a few summers now and am thinking of selling them next spring and getting something different now. Hope the pics below help give you an idea of what you might be looking for!

RE: Stereo's and Rims...
Very very nice!
I really like the tint. Chrome's are nice. What's the lug pattern on those wheels? That's the info I really need to get to shoppin'
I know our cars 'official' lug pattern is 5 x 120.7 mm but I'm guessing that 5 x 120 mm will fit. That is a common aftermarket size as it's BMW as well. Or is yours a sae lug pattern? (in inches?)
Jag looks good, I really like the tint. Did I mention that?
How do you get the 12's to actually sound in the cabin, I would have though with the gastank and the full on metal rear parcel tray that wouldn't really do any good? I've got a few spare 12' subs and amps lying around, I'd love to get them in there. I AM a fan of chest squashing bass. Although something about my Jag makes me not wanna do that to her.
My '72 Beetle however is equipped with two 6' up front, to 6x9's in the back and somehow I squeezed two 12's back there too. When the lows hit it feels like a sledgehammer. That's going to be impossible to replicate in such a well insulated vehicle as the Jag. I'm not even going to try, I just want a good full sound.
Get back to me on the lug pattern!
TIA
David

RE: Stereo's and Rims...
The main speakers to concentrate on that will enhance your system the most are the two speakers underneath the rear seats.I initially replaced the 4 door speakers and noticed some improvement in the sound, but it wasn't until I later replaced the two speakers underneath the rear seats that I noticed atremendous difference.
