Default Talking alternator !

My beloved '94 XJ40's alternator is making a lot of mechanical noise on start-up. It makes the sort of noises that lead me to believe that the stator is loose on the shaft. When you rev the engine up to about 1500 rpm, it makes a short shriek, and then is perfectly fine until you shut it down again and another start from cold.

The belt is A-OK, tensioned properly, and the pulley isn't loose, runs fine and true.

Anybody ever ran into this? Thanks !

Best -

Jeff

Sounds like a dry bearing to me, I had something similar on my old Corvette.

Mikey, you were right "on the money". It is indeed a dry rear bearing.

Many thanks -

Jeff
