Default Throttle position sensor/Limp mode

So I finally got around to handing my XJ6 over to my mechanic (been busy with fixing my daily) to check out the TPS on Y'all's recommendation. He took it out to clean and said it looked as though someone had already had their way with it. He cleaned what he could, and reinstalled it. He reports that it now runs worse. Does anyone have a suggestion on what to replace it with? A seller or brand perhaps? Amazon has the best price over Rockauto with both selling Standard Motor Products. Advance has an Intermotor but the highest price by far. Any specialty parts dealers?

SNG Barratt has an aftermarket one for about $70, pretty hard to beat that price. Part number ULC3117J*

Did he mark the position of the TPS before he removed it, and then reinstall it in the exact same position? If not, the TPS is probably out of calibration, which can definitely cause issues. The Workshop Manual and I think also the Haynes Repair Manual give the procedure for calibrating the TPS.

How did he clean the TPS? Zero-residue electronic spray or some other method?

Cheers,

Don

I trust my mechanic, he's not a hack. I have to imagine he used electronic parts cleaner. I didn't ask. I've been taking cars to him for several years and he hasn't screwed up yet. And as far as I know, marking the mounting position is SOP on most TPSes.

Also, that part on SNG doesn't have a picture. Are we sure it's the same? Most sources have the part at around 300 dollars. How can the price be that disparate?

Google the part number and check for yourself., or better still, call and ask.

Guessing because the other parts are overpriced - TPS's for other cars are even cheaper than that.

Not sure why cleaning the original TPS would make the car run worse, that really doesn't make sense unless it was damaged before it was cleaned?

If there are open circuit places on the potentiometer, then cleaning it will not fix it!!
Moving parts wear out.

Yeah, my guy told me it looked like someone had already tried to repair it in some way. Guess it didn't work.
