Default Under-the-hood Battery Sizes XJ40 USA

Hello,

I can't seem to find any definitive information on what the correct battery is for a '92 XJ6 with a battery under the hood.

The battery installed in the car when I purchased it was an EverStart MAXX Group Size 47/H5 battery. The battery is 9.56 x 6.88 x 7.5 (L x W x H).

The battery tray installed in the car is 11" x 7" x 7 3/4". My VIN is 656772.

Reading a TSB 86-119:

"Replace the original Varta DIN 55 battery (JLM 10453) or Interstate battery with a Varta DIN 66 battery (JLM 10455)."

The bulletin details retrofitting in a bigger battery tray (DBC 10489). It pertains to XJ40's with VINs 594576 - 653469.

So my '92 XJ6 has the bigger battery tray from the factory. So I'd need a DIN 66 battery. But what Group size is that? Obviously my Group 47/H5 is too small, and was the right size for the car originally, but as detailed in the bulletin, I'm suffering from battery discharge after short drives.

Does anyone know what DIN 66 is equivalent to?

Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick,

The battery in our '93 is mounted in the trunk and it's an H5 / Group 47, so that doesn't help answer your question.

According to the chart at this site:

BATTERY SIZES - BATTERY WORLD

A DIN 66 battery is 276mm L X 175mm W X 175mm H X 175mm Total Height.

Dividing those dimensions by 25.4 mm-per-inch, I come up with roughly 10-7/8 in. L X 6-7/8 in. W X 6-7/8 in. H X 6-7/8 in. Total Height.

Checking those dimensions against the chart at this site:

Interstate Batteries

It appears that an H6 / Group 48 battery might be a good fit, assuming the slight extra height isn't a problem.

The Group 78U battery has a good footprint and even better power specs, but it is even taller.

The 40R should fit, but its power ratings look low.

Have a look and see what you think.

I just happened to find that size chart at the Interstate website, so I'm not trying to steer you in that direction. Their batteries are mostly made by Johnson Controls, who also make batteries for Walmart, O'Reilly, AutoZone, Sears Diehard, Advance Auto, Costco, and many automakers. Our '93 is hard on batteries, and I've had equally mediocre performance from Interstate, ACDelco and Sears Diehard. For the past several years I've been buying our XJ40 batteries at Walmart simply because their warranty-exchange program is so good. The last two or three batteries have grown weak before their 3-year warranty was up so the new replacements have cost me about $20 each. It's possible the batteries JC makes for Interstate or others are better than those they make for Walmart, but the published specs are usually similar. For our '04, I replaced the original Varta (owned by JC) with an AutoZone Duralast Gold (made by JC) because neither Walmart nor O'Reilly had the correct size in stock.

If you find a battery that works great in your '92, please let us know, because I'd like to find one that will work better in our '93.

Cheers,

Don

Thanks for the replies! I can't remember if I posted this topic in the correct forum; if so, please excuse my mistake. Since I've purchased my X305 I seem to automatically go right for the X300/X305 forums.

Thanks Jerry, at least it's good to confirm that I'm not too far off with a Group 47.

And Don, that's a huge amount of research. Thanks for everything. I was trying to dig through the different battery interchanges but couldn't come up with any real answers in the short time I spent looking. Group 48/H6 sounds good, and from some preliminary searches I see some battery websites that list both 66 and H6 in their interchange.

If I head to my local Sears Auto Center, I can bring it right out to the car and check the fitment there. I've had the battery in and out so many times, I could probably do it in the parking lot in 3 minutes flat. lol

I'll let you guys know what I find.

Thanks,
Nick

The group 47 is the correct battery IF the larger battery tray has NOT been fitted as per TSB 86-119.

The H6 (group 48) can be fitted if the larger tray is fitted.

Here is TSB 3-174 for reference.
