Default Vehicle Identity Number XJ40

All,

I have recently bought a 1990 XJ40 4.0l in Daimler spec.
I have however noticed that the VIN shown on the windscreen and on the identity plate on the B-pillar does not match with the number that appears on the inner wing in the engine compartment.
The first set of VIN are stating with SAJD (D for Daimler as I understand), while the other number on the inner wing starts with SABTV.
Are these numbers supposed to match? According to the Haynes manual that I have for this vehicle, it should be the case. However, my local Jag part retailer told me that the SABTV number does not refer to any vehicle in his system.

Cheers,

Nick.

I have never paid any attention to the plate on the b pillar or so , you have only one identity plate in other words VIN # is located behind the windshield

That's what the parts guy told me. The VINshould bethe one in the windscreen tag.
However, the registration documents for the vehicle state the number from the inner wing has being the VIN number.
So I guess I was trying to find out whether this vehicle had been rebuild with a new shell in the past? Or perhapsthe mismatch is a Daimler thing?

I guess a survey from the various XJ40 owners reading this post would give us the answer.

Nick.

Normal.

TheVIN at the windshield (and door jamb) follows North American VIN conventions/regulations.

The other(s) are are the originalJaguar VIN system.

If the last 6 digits are different you have a problem. Otherwise...no worries.

I guess I should have asked what part of the world you are in and how the car is badged.

But, here in the USA, it is perfectly normal to see two different VINs on the same car, for the reason I mentioned.

DD,

Thanks for your reply. My car is registered in the UK as a Daimler 4 litres.
The last 6 digits on the 2 VINs are different. However the one on starting SAJD (on the windscreen and B pillar) is the only one that is recognisable from the Jag part database. So I assume that this is the one to use.
Although there isn't really a standard for VIN location in Europe, VIN are normally located in the engine compartement and it is unlikely thata car presents different VINs when stamped on more that one locations. Hence my initial worry.

There's the problem. You've got some sort of mix-n-match going on, I think.

That's the feeling I had. On the other hand, the number on the inner wing does not appear to be a Jag VIN. All VINs should start with SAJ and should have a combination of 17 digits and characters. The one on the inner wing starting SAB has and extra 4 digits.
So I wonder what that number could really be.

The trunk sticker must be for something else. A Jaguars begin SAJJ and all Daimlers begin SAJD.

That would make a lot of sense.
