Default What gearboxes are used in the xj40?

Hello everybody,

I own a jaguar xj6, series 1. It has some engine problems, and I am fitting an AJ6 engine, as they are relatively cheap nowadays, and more reliable compared to the original xk. I want to fit it, with the zf gearbox. (I'm buying a whole car, en just take what I need from it.)

I have a question though. I read something about two kinds of gearboxes. The zf 4hp24 and zf 4hp22. This last one seems to be easier, as there are no electrical controls. So I want a 4hp22. But do al xj40 have this one, or are there also xj40with a 4hp24 box?

Thanks for your help, it makes the searching for a good donor car easier :-)

To my recollection, the 88-89 XJ6 has the 4hp22 with the shallow pan and the 90-97 cars have the 4hp24 with a deeper pan. Good luck with the swap.

To my understanding the 4hp22 were fitted to the XJ40 3.6 up to august 1989 and the ZF 4HP24 were fitted to the 4.0 litre with sport mode

Hmm. I couldn't wait really...but thnks for your replies.

Bought an xj40 sovereign from 94 yesterday. With a 4.0 liter engine and the zf 4hp24 transmission. I figured that because I have the entire car, I can just take all the electronics with it into my xj6... See how that works out.

Apparently the diff is also different...if it doesn't involve to much work, I might swap it as well.

Thanks anyway. For those who are interested, I will start a new thread in the xj6 section.

Hi Wilfred88
TO change the diff from XJ40 to XJ6 will be a major job your existing diff would be ok you only need to alter your drive shaft and rear g/box mount.
I have done several AJ6 & ZF 4HP22 conversions into series 1 &2s. well worth the effort

Some other changes will need to be done like fuel tanks I used series 3 as they were fuel injected and you need to have fuel return to tanks and the s/3 fuel solenoids and change over valve.
all the best with your project keep us posted

Thanks for your replies. The idea about changing the diff came from a dutch guy who took the diff from an x300 and placed it under his series 1. Together with an AJ16 engine and 4hp24 transmission. Probably I will not go that far. I'm already sticking to the AJ6 engine for one thing. But he made it look easy and had a very nice mileage now, because he cruises at 120 km/hour at very nice revs.

Anyway, tomorrow I'm picking up my xj40. Was thinking to use it's fuel tank a well, but don't know if this will fit? Otherwise I might go series III, good tip!

Final thing is that I'm not sure about the gearbox yet. It seems possible to bolt my borg warner 66 (yes, my series I had a series III transmission when I bought it) to the AJ6 engine. Not optimal possibly but I'm not after a race car. And it wouldn't mess with the interior of my series 1. I like the original gear selector way better then the J thingy of the xj40.

Choices...But a very nice project. Can't wait to get started.

The XJ40 tank does fit behind the back seat in the boot I did this in my S/1 race car fitted with AJ6 engine and 5 speed gear box but I had to remove the boot ( trunk) hinges as they fouled the tank. did not matter in race car as I lightend and pinned the boot ( trunk ) lid. Also had to cut a hole above the diff because of the shape at the bottom of XJ40 tank for pick up and fuel pipes so probably not practicle in your case.
Another idea is to have an alloy tank fabricated to fit in where the spare wheel sits but then you need to find some where for the wheel.

Hi, I picked up on this thread as I have an interest in fitting a ZF in a 3.8 mk2( Well just an interest at the moment) Is the block of a 3.6 like that of the earlier 3.8? Will the bell housing of the ZF fit it directly? So many questions, but will leave it at that for now.
have assumed fitting a ZF without the need of electronics.

I thought the xk engines didn't line up with the ZF engines. the 3.8 is an XK engine, while the 3.6 is an AJ engine.

as far as I know, the bolting patter of both bell housings are different. That's why I can't place the BorgWarner behind the AJ6 engine.

but I can tell you for sure when I have the AJ6 engine + ZF Box standing next to the XK engine + BW box. Which will hopefully be wednesday

:-)

It would be possible to fit the BorgWarner be hind the AJ6 engine as the bell housing seperates from the gear box then you can have an adaptor plate made up to go between the BorgWarner bellhousing and the ZF gearbox as that also has a seperate bellhousing. The same could be done with the fitting of the ZF into the MK2 as you would need the DG bell housing onto the XK engine to fit the starter motor which is on the opposite side to the AJ engine. The other problem you would have fitting the ZF box to the MK2 is the ZF does not use a speedo cable they have an electronic transducer pick up from the diff.

I am in the new year fitting a 5 speed getrag to my 1976 XJS V12 which is currently running a model 12 gearbox. I am using the model 12 bell housing and have had the adaptor plate made up to go between it and the get rag gear box it all bolts up perfect. By using an auto type bell housing on to a manual gear box there is nowhere to fit a clutch slave cylinder to side of gear box so I am fitting a Quarter Master Hydraulic Release Bearing which fits inside the bell housing
