Default What oil weight and anti freeze?

Hi guys, I'm curious what weight you guys like to use for the 3.6 motor. I was thinking of using 20w50 Brad Penn for its high zinc content and my car has fuel in the oil.
Also, what antifreeze? O.A.T or just any is OK?

Matt:
I don't do my own oil (I'm lazy), but I'm positive my Jag tech uses 10W30 in my 4.0s.
For what it's worth...

No need for any boutique oil in any Jag. No need or benefit in deviating from manufacturer's viscosity spec either. I'm not familiar with the cam and lifter type of this engine, but if it's a flat tappet type, use Shell Rotella to ensure you have anough ZDDP. Available at Walmart.

If you have fuel in the oil, that needs to be fixed immediately. No oil will protect an engine from that.

Well I'm trying to figure out what the recommended viscosity is. Brad Penn isn't really a boutique oil, and has the highest zddp content around, it's what I've always run in my street/cars. I'm trying to learn what viscosity you guys seem to use.
Yeah I'm not sure if it needs rings or not, gotta figure out. I do know with a good oil fuel dilution can be easier offset, for example BMW N54 direct injection caused terrible fuel dilution, but is manageable.
Thanks

After much reading (I'm extremely oil savvy) I've found most run 15w40 in these so I'm gonna go Delvac 1300 in it and it seems 8qts does the job.

It's in your owner's manual.

Getting the Owner's Manuals with a used Jaguar is rare. When it comes to the XJ40, they are approaching collectors item status!

Lol no doubt, thanks for the help! I'm not the original owner or anything and having owned 80+ cars I find it very rare to get an owners manual to anything lol.

As always Graham, to the rescue!

Perhaps with your background- would you know what type of valve gear is used in this engine? IOW- is an oil with elevated ZDDP levels (pre-API category SM) required?

Sorry guys long day at work lol.
I believe these to be flat tappet motors which greatly benefit from high zddp like Audi inline 5 and Alfa Romeo 2.0 motors. I'm gonna use rotella or delvac.

Also FYI I'm going to run VW/Audi G12 coolant as its HOAT and I run it in everything.

That's what I used last oil change -- 15w40. I had previously used 5w30 and 10w30 and the oil gauge was always reading low. After changing to 15w40 the gauge has been fine.

Hello there fellow Ohioan! Yeah a heavier weight in these older motors is always a safe bet to me. I still gotta wrap my head around these newer cars running 0w30 lol.

Hello. Which weight oil you use depends on the ambient air temp, as shown in the owners manual chart. I use 20w50 during the summer and switch to 15w40 for the winter. As both seasons are warmer in Texas than in the northern U.S., you may want to adjust what weight you use accordingly. As for new cars that use very thin 0w20 oil, I believe have very tiny oil ports in the engine and their variable valve timing systems that will clog if heavier weight oil is used.

On another note, I bought my 94 xj12 a year ago with its original owners manual and other documents. I also recently viewed another locally which was being sold with a full set of jaguar 93-94 XJ12 shop manuals which is a very very rare find by itself.

I'd put good money on you not finding 3 in a row with a full set of manuals!

A lot of the newer engine's reasoning behind lighter oil is fuel economy and tight tolerances. 0w20 or 5w30 is ideal for cold starts because it flows easier and faster, but in older engines with looser tolerances a heavier oil is necessary especially with flat tappets

Well..

Back when I was selling these (Up till 05) we ONLY used Castrol in them. 20W50 in Florida.. if it was winter and the car was going up north we'd use 10W40 Castrol.

Zinc? I'm familiar with ZDDP in my old cars.. Use STP oil treatment, it has Zinc in it.

Coolant? Green stuff from Autozone is fine. Just don't waste $$ on the 50-50 ripoff stuff, buy the full strength and dilute it, just use distilled water to mix it.
