Hi my first post on this forum, I've got a digital dashboard problem on my 1989 XJ40 2.9L, intermittant fault it works when it feels like it. Everything else works fine, the red square outline lights up everytime, but not the instruments.
Any ideas greatly appreciated, before I wade in and pull the panel out?

 

Most people just POUND the dashtop over the inst pk to see it light up. Sometimes it stays lit for a while.

Digital display staying on and off randomly is most probably caused by the cold solder at the display driving transformer inside the instrument cluster, just re-solder all transformer joints and it should be back

 

meanwhile, as Bob says, a good thump on the binnacle can sometimes work wonders
