I will see it tomorrow. Anyway I am not a mechanic. the car has really low miles. From the pictures it looks really good. Anyway the engine is 3.6 Liters
so I think around 200HP. Is the Lucas injection system any good or is it troublesome?
is it prone to failure ? What are the things to be aware about the AJ6 engine ?

So I finally saw the car, xj6 from 1989.
clan status.
the good:
* car almost perfect inside and outside. No rust at all, great body
* elderly person owned, very low miles (69000)
* looks like everything works inside the car, power seats power windows and sunroof. not sure about air conditioning it was cold outside in Walnut Creek so I do not know if it works or not.

the bad:
* garaged for the last 6 years, they brought it to the mechanic for a tune up but this is not necessarily a bad, anyway:
*they changed only oil
* never had a brake fluid flush and change
* transmission never been serviced
* I guess engine belts never been replaced as well.

* there is an alarm on the dash saying: power fluid low (!)
* VCM errors says: power fluid low (!), anti lock failure(!)

so there is some issue with the brakes. IT might be expensive to fix.
the power fluid low comes both as an error on the dash and if I press the VCM button.
Maybe a brake oil leak ?

* one of the wheel is missing a bolt. The bolt missing is the anti-theft one. they replaced a tire and the idiot tire guy voluntarily broken it to have the wheel out. So the right wheel is missing a bolt and it has only 4 in place. Possibly the one missing has the housing totally worn out, I am not sure but why then they did not put another bolt ?

* I did not notice any fluid leaks but the engine was super clean, they had it cleaned out, so it's impossible to see anything other than a very clean engine.

they want $5000. I think it's too muc a t this point.
What do you think about the VCM errors ?
and what about the missing bolt ? can the car driven like that ?

by the way the tires needs a replacement. It has one new tire and 3 old ones and worn out.

I also have a video of the engine running, I Can post it if it can be useful.

here is some picture

It looks like a nice presentable car. While the price is high, you might try to negotiate a better price because of it's faults. The braking system can be problematic and expensive on the 88-89 models if you try to fix the existing system. There is an cheaper alternative to fixing the old hydraulic system by replacing it with a Series III brake booster,an adaptor plate, and a few other little pieces. I recently converted my '88 and it cost me just about $125 and they brakes work great. You can then remove all that leaky hydraulic system. This will work just as long as the rear suspension has already been converted to regular springs/shocks and not the hydraulic self leveling system. As for the ABS codes and low fluid level warnings on the dash, this will all bypassed during the brake conversion. You can temporarily drive it without the wheel stud but it should be a simple fix to replace it and not costly at all. New tires will run around $100-125 each. I would check the a/c and heating system. See if the blower works on all speeds and feel for airflow at all the vents. It may just need a recharge but if not it could get expensive. Use all this to negotiate a lower price, maybe somewhere around $3500-4000,because your going to have to add this to the price of the car plus your mechanics labor costs unless you can do some of it yourself and save some money.

Hello,
I told him that I will not spend $5000 for a car which has all these issues to fix.
About the brake conversion it may be really more expensive than $1500. Which mechanic is available to do so ? I do not know of anyone in the Bay Area.
Anyway I told him to be back to me after 2 months if he is not able to sell it.
thanks for now!

The Brake Conversion consists of finding a used Series III brake booster for under $50. You then need to make a simple 5" square adaptor plate with 8 holes. Then it's simply unbolting the existing hydraulics and mounting the booster between the brake pedal box and the master cylinder. You don't disconnect the master cylinder at all so no need to bleed the brakes. The only thing left to do is to move the coolant tank about 1 1/2" forward and adjust the brake switch. It's all very simple and many people here have done it.There are three short wires that need to get connected so you don't get the low fluid level warnings and low brake pressure warnings.

I do not think I Am able to do the conversion by myself.
The low level brakes fluid is on even if the level is max. And I noticed the lever does not decrease in the tank. Could it be a faulty sensor ?

The first XJ40 I ever considered buying had a warning for low coolant level which the owner paid a garage $100 to repeadedly correct ....however the warning light wasn't for coolant but washer fluid and when I topped it up on the test drive the light went out

There is a nice xj40 with 66000mi only from 1994. It has anyway wire wheels... I do not think they are original. it is sold by a dealer so he won't get lower on the price asking $3880. Cosmetically is in pretty good shape also the interiors are really good (not pristine though). Is the AJ6 engine prone to any common troubles to watch for?
thanks

AJ6's are almost bulletproof, so the engine is the least thing to be concerned about in getting a 94
