Is Your XJ40 Worth This

Thought xj40 owners might get a chuckle out of this. A buyer MIGHT offer $4500-$5000. It's no even a VDP.

I guess the dealer wants that much because it has the ULTRA-RARE 5 speed automatic??????
All the one's I owned and repaired had the ZF4HP24 or the ZF4HP22.

Lawrence: Nice double six shown by Noble House. Is the Majestic Europe's version of our VDP? There was a beautiful XJ81 in mid-Michigan via c-list for $7500 but it's no longer posted. I did find this beauty this morning. It looks really, really nice and the starting price is very fair. If it was painted clairet? (reddish cranberry) I would probably be driving 4 hours to see it today.

96x300: That's the thing about older Jags, good ones can be snagged for under $2000. It's because we live in a throw away society and most car owners barely can put gas in their cars and fear any vehicle that is 10+ years old. I don't mind because I've bought some beautiful cars, including my current '88 Eldorado and my '91 XJ40 for a song, $500 and $1500 respectively.

Lawrence: I just found this. I am thoroughly confused because a few months ago I was looking for an xj40 and found an xj81 in mid-Michigan for $5500 (well over my poor-man's budget. I talked to the owner, the car sounded fabulous but the v12 and the price caused me to pass. Then about a month later, I saw it posted for $7500 (I think because he paid to have the suspension renewed). It disappeared then I found this listing. It's not a good photo but it looks like the same car but now only $3500. How many xj81s can there be in the same area of MI?

I might give him a call now that my curiosity is up.

So much depends on what a buyer is looking for.
The $14k asking price is crazy, but.......
If a person was looking for a Jag with mint condition cosmetics.....paint, bodywork, chrome, leather, wood, headliner, etc.....then he'd probably be willing to pay more than $5000. I know I would, at least !
Bringing a typical "fair/decent/good" XJ40 that you'd buy for $1500-$2000-$3000 up to the same level would cost many, many thousands of dollars....far more than the difference in initial purchase price.
Cheers

No.
The USA VDPs were more closely aligned with the Daimler Double Six as far as trim and features go, but the Majestic is a bit of a different animal.
Jaguar sold a version of the Majestic in the USA for a couple years. It was a special model, an upgrade over the VDP. I think they were marketed here as the "Vanden Plas Majestic".
The Majestic mentioned in the link is one of the rare ROW versions with the stretched wheelbase. I think some had a re-worked roof as well, for more headroom. I'll let others comment here as I'm no authority on XJ40s (or anything else, for that matter)
Cheers

Jag couldn't use the Daimler name in NA., so they used the name of a coachbuilder that worked on Daimlers years ago ...Jaguar 'recycled' model names etc., quite a bit.
Here's the 1964 (pre-Jag ownership) Daimler Majestic Major my dad bought for £200 from the Ford dealer in 1969 - actually, we traded in a mini and they gave us £200 if I remember correctly!.
This Majestic Major was V8 powered, 19" wheels, picnic tables/walnut trim just like the VDP's and of course the coachbuilder of this car was Vanden Plas. In those days in the UK, gas was pricey and this heavy low mileage example got between 6 and 8 MPG, so it wasn't for everyone... was a big hit with the girls though (on the nights I was able to borrow it!)
Where is it now? ...scrapped and cubed long ago and probably part of your wife's Hyundai today.
