1985 XJ6 Radiator Swap and Expansion Tank
I recently purchased a 1985 XJ6 Jaguar which has a leaking expansion tank. Is there a way to convert the cooling system to an open system? I thought I read somewhere about possibly using the next generation radiator with an overflow bottle, but cannot recall where I saw the article. Am I confused about this and the next generation still uses a closed system requiring an expansion tank?
Alternatively, if I stay with the closed cooling system I have is there a good source for getting a new or used expansion tank? Is there a stainless steel alternative that will last longer than the plastic one?
Thank you,

Much lighter and much better cooling, than stock radiator.
Also add an oil cooler.
An expansion tank from a Series II car will work, perfectly.
Exchange the clutch fan to a stainless steel bladed flex fan.
These are readily available for Jaguars.
And possibly not needed. Broadly speaking the original spec radiator is perfectly adequate for the Ser III XJ6 for most owners/conditions
Also add an oil cooler.
Standard issue on the Ser III XJ6 after c.1981
Exchange the clutch fan to a stainless steel bladed flex fan.
.
.
Again, might be the right choice in some cases but the original style fan and clutch, if not worn out, do the job perfectly well in most cases.

I have seen Jaguar clutch fans seize and sling a blade through the bonnet.
I can drive my coupe, with the aircon running, in 104 degree ambient temps, with stop and go traffic. Gauge stays on the cool mark. Flex fans are inexpensive and they move more air, than stock fan. I drive in brutally hot weather, so this conversion may not be for everyone.

As have so many of us, I reckon! Rather than say "....if not worn out" I should've *specifically* mentioned the possibility of seizing up as well. Still, though it's a good set-up for most people and most conditions.

They often do, and often with increased noise that some people wouldn't like
this conversion may not be for everyone.
I agree :-) But it might be just right for others.

No insulation on the bonnet of my car. The original had detiorated to "moth eaten bear rug" status. I tossed it.
No issues temp or noise yet.
My car has twin Efans. Straight bladed, so a td noisy. But, no issue to me, especially if I've not put on my ear aids!!!
When, I removed the original ugly yellow plastic fan from my car, I was alarmed at the many cracks at the hub. I've since learned that they are relatively harmless "??
OTH, my Jeep with many miles and a steel fan and fan clutch works just fine.
Old well tested tech.
