Default 74 XJ12 Differential Output Shaft Seal Replacement

I'm looking for information on steps to replace the output shaft seals for an early S2 XJ12. In the parts books there are two versions. One uses a crush sleeve to get the correct preload. I think that is a later version of the final drive. Mine I don't believe uses that and in looking at the parts diagrams looks like the final drive design is a carryover from the S1. My S2 Repair Operations Manual only mentions how to install the crush sleeve version. The U-tubes I've found are the same. Does someone have an S1 manual that goes through the process that they can share with me before I start taking the bearing off.

Thanks and Cheers.

I have the S2 parts book dated September 1976, and it does show the two versions. It shows a version with a single large bearing and says that is without the letter S adjacent to the serial number. The second version uses two bearings to carry the output shaft and the crush sleeve is between them. The note says that version is for units with the letter S adjacent to the serial number

To take it apart, I'd undo the nut and press the output shaft off the bearing. The seal is likely accessible from the inside to tap it out. Looks like the seal is an O ring, #12473?

I just had to rebuild a later one, due to broken bolt, but looking at everything it certainly can be a bit difficult to distinguish between the different ones, basically what got me on the right track was the shap of the flange that bolts to differential , earlier version is more indented on top and uses a gasket to seal to housing and later is more square and uses a large o ring. I know it’s not much help, but it’s all i have. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I know I have the earlier version and I was looking for the installation instructions since the S2 ROM only covers the later version. I found the answer in the Haynes book.
