Default 78 XJ6 Ser2 pulling to one side on decel

I just picked this car up yesterday and it pulls hard to the right when the gas is let off. The steering in the car is let's say "responsive" so I look a bit drunk trying to get it in a straight line down the road. Any thoughts? I will be taking it in for an alignment tomorrow, but didn't know if there was anything of a known problem with the XJ6 and this issue.

A common problem is rotten steering rack bushings....although the symptom is very loose, sloppy steering....not over-responsive.

I suspect something is very loose or worn. Make sure they check for worn ball joints, control arm bushings, etc.

Cheers

There could be a lot of bushes and balljoints worn out, unless the previous owners looked after the car properly. Rear suspension as well as front.

I am starting to suspect a dragging brake. If I put it in neutral, or any gear for that matter it doesn't really move without gas, or in the case of neutral, being pushed. Overall the car was pretty well cared for in the past but it has been sitting in a garage for the past 6 years. On the plus side I can only find minor rust anywhere and the interior is amazing. On the minus side, I am sure I have a lot of seals to replace.

Just got done swapping the brake booster which is the single most user unfriendly booster install I have ever seen.

Yes, it could be a seized caliper piston, front or rear. DO either of the front wheels get hot after a run ? Rears are more difficult because they are inboard, get a lot less attention, and can seize. I had one do this, however fronts will have much more effect on the steering.

look for bent inner tie rod, under inflated tire or a stuck piston in the front caliper, causing the breaks to drag.

Your problem is most likely one or both rear hub fulcrum bearings that have failed and worn grooves into the race. My old 1972 XJ6 had this fault and I had to slightly steer one way upon acceleration and the other on decell until I replaced the bearings.

The rear wheel will 'steer' the car as it rotates on the vertical axis if it drives forward on accell or falls back on decell.

Just an update, fixed this issue. It was a dragging brake. I replaced both front calipers and the brake lines, bled the system, no more pull on decel and tons of stopping power. Now I just need to replace my steering rack bushings, because they are non-existant which is causing all sorts of issues.

If you need some rack bushings, rockauto is clearing out the Beck pieces for $0.91!
