87 XJ6 Radio Code Won't Save
Asking for code at every startup, the code won't save. What's the problem here guys? Is there some special sequence or trick? Have 2 radio units, both have same problem so must not be the head units themselves....
Have you done anything on the car recently ? Normally, a radio unit will constantly detect car battery voltage and when this is lost at the radio, the code is lost. So it could be the way it is wired-up.
That's what I thought, and if a later radio has been fitted, the existing wiring might not provide a constant voltage to the right radio connection to maintain the code, as it didn't need it originally. As I recall with my 1980 model, the radio/tape unit only gets a supply once the ignition switch is turned to position 1.
Perhaps you don't have the "constant" power supply required to hold the code. Check you wires and fuses under the console. It's a little tricky...post back if you need details

You're wrong :-)
The '87 Ser III uses the AJ8700 code lock radio.

But is the radio getting constant voltage? Did you check the fuses under the consoole?

The radio needs 2 power supplies. One is constant battery supply (memory) and the other is power from the ignition 'ON' for radio/casstte 'PLAY'. Your memory supply is open circuit or faulty radio.

Don't think its the radio because its the 2nd one I've tried from the same production year. I tried another radio from a previous year, that unit does not require a code. The tune buttons didn't work on that one though. I checked the #3 fuse (15a) which controlls aerial radio, amoung other things. Seems to be in fine order. Someone said that it could be a bad ground of the radio unit, so I'm trying to trace where that is grounded to.
I can key in the code in record time tho!!!

Do you have a wiring diagram for your car? If you had that, you could find both power leads that Bob is referring to, and a simple check with a voltmeter will either confirm or debunct that power issue. But, i'm also leaning towards that...as you have two radios doing the exact same thing...what are the odds both have bad power leads inside it?

That's the wrong fuse.
As I recall the radio is grounded to the sheet metal directly behind the mounting area
