Hi, 1972 XJ12 that wont move in reverse, and I can hear something slipping when selecting R. I plan to adjust the rear bands as a first step.
Question is though how do I access the rear band adjustment mechanism. Can I do it from inside the car, and if so do I need to remove the center console to get to the access hole in the tunnel, or must I access the band adjuster from underneath the vehicle?
I can find lots on line about how to set the adjuster itself, but nothing on how to access it!
Well, I was super surprised that no one answered, but I figured it out for myself. Here are some pictures and location description in case this can help someone else.
The band adjustment can be found on the right, just at the lower, forward, edge of the center console. You can get to the access panel by pulling the carpet up from the floor, and can potentially undo the fixings that hold the cover and plate without moving the console.
That said, I had to move the console rearward to get to the access plate and make the band adjustment.
With the carpet pulled away you can just see the cover plate, but hard to access without moving the console. With console loosened and pulled rearwards you can access the 2 fixings to the cover plate. The band adjuster itself.
