The clacking noise may be a loose tappet guide, it is a common problem on 70s Jaguars. There is a stake-down kit available on the internet somewhere. However, the previous owner may have bent a valve starting it. So you definitely need to take off the cam covers and check valve clearances, then look to see if you have a loose tappet guide. You can normally tell by seeing the marks on it where the cam clouts it. They loosen up when the engine warms up, it might not move when cold.
I have never seen this syndrome BTW, just passing on what I have read.

Pauls Jaguar in Florida used to be the place to go for Coup parts. I would give them a shout to see if they still carry the parts. A long time ago they gave me a hard cover book covering a complete rebuild of a coup. I would also ask if they have any copies left that they could send you. Absolute gold mine on useful information.
If they don't, just drop me a line and I will give you the one I have. I would prefer to hang on to it but if you are in a bind I will let it go.
