Default Car identification plz help

Hi all,
I have an XJ6 S1 i'm working on the get running, i have basic information about the series 1 numbers but these i don't have so if anyone can fill in the blanks it would be greatly appreciated, the reason for this request is the car has a manual transmission (jaguar motor) but has an auto transmission console. Can't find a year stamp anywhere.
INFO> Car # 1L 12280 BW
Body # 4L 17811
Engine # 7L 23420-S (matches plate)
Gear Box # 15762

I'm no help, but the "BW" does confirm that the car was originally born with an automatic trans

Tom,

My car on the road is 3/73 manufacture Car no 1L 30422BW (auto)
My spares car is 3/71 manufacture Car no.1L 14484BW Body no 4L 22434

so indications are that your car is earlier than March 1971

Would appreciate a photo of your car.

Doug/ Mekon,
thanks for your reply, as i suspected it was originally an auto, has a red jaguar motor in it which may have been a reco motor, were there any factory manuals around 1969/70? i almost got it going today but has a massive fuel leak at rear carb sandwich plate, think i'll be losing money on this one but determine to having it running right. Mekon, the car is a typical white series one, light blue interior, hand wind up/down windows

well here's a good one for you all, this switch is in the ski slope & appears to be out of an MK 11, i'm guessing it was used as switch for the OD as there's no switch in the gear shift, this car keeps throwing curve ***** at me every time i go near it.............any comments?

WTF is this doing in the car....OD switch NOT auto it appears

Mysterious, yes.

It might have been installed for an entirely different purpose, unrelated to transmission.

But......

From the 50's to mid-60s Jaguar used an old Borg Warner design (DG250) that featured "intermediate speed hold". It locked the transmission in 2nd gear. You'll see that switch on any Jag of the era with an automatic transmission.

However, Jaguar dropped this transmission in the mid 60s, maybe 1966 or so? It may not have been dropped from all models simultaneously, however. I'm not sure. But, I've never seen or heard of an XJ6 with this older transmission. As far as I know all Series I XJ6s had the Borg Warner Model 35, Model 8, or Model 11. None of them had the intermediate hold feature as far as I know.

Let's hear what others have to say

Cheers

that switch is for the DG250 transmission used in MK-2, S type, and 420 Small Saloons
1959 to 1966.

it is a Second Gear Hold,
"in" means "ON", "out" means "OFF".

the hold switch is used in city traffic or when climbing a steep mountain when you don't want the
transmission to shift to Third Gear because the Third Gear in a DG250 transmission is like a Fourth gear, very tall for highway cruising at 100mph.

My '65 S type has it too. So basically the gears in a DG250 are First, Second, and Fourth.

the switch knob is incorrectly
oriented in the photo.
It should be East to West or Left to Right, instead of North to South or up/down.

Hi all again,
i've had a better look today & the switch has been used as an on/off for the OD on the manual gearbox instead of in the shift button........

yes it is obvious since the XJ-6 never had that Speedhold switch from new.

looks like the owner or the shop who did it were familiar with previous Jaguar model. parts.
