Default "Clunking" in rear

Hi All,

Have an 87 xj6 that has some clunking from the rear. This clunking only occurs when moving forward while making right turns. I suspect it is a U-joint gone bad. Hoping someone knows which U-joint is problematic or at least what side? Not looking to get into a U-joint overhaul at the moment, just looking to fix the troublesome one.

I did read this forum: U-Joint Replacement

Was helpful because he had the same issue, but does not say which side he replaced and whether it was inner or outer. I have slid back the u-joint covers at the hub and they look fine, but I know that does not mean much.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Bill

Bill,

Welcome to the forum.

Nothing on these as common. RHD versus LHD has it side related issues obviously.

The 4 half shaft joints have a grease fitting that is 99% forgotten.

Mostly a good squirt of grease sorts them for a period. They do not rotate as fast as the prop shaft, but do have more load on them from the suspension since the half shaft IS the upper suspension arm.

Lots of other items that can "clunk" back there now due to age, and poor maintaining.

Thank you for the feed back. I put it on jacks this afternoon and put it in drive and can hear it clunking like crazy on the passenger side. I wish greasing them would fix the problem

Bugga.

Not the exhaust getting clobbered by the diveshaft?. That is common.

You haven't locked a mate in the boot have you?
I did that once to get him into the speedway for free, but forgot to let him out.
There was a clunking in the rear of the car when we came back for him.

Default Clunking

The "over the axle" exhaust pipes can rattle like hell if not held in place just so.

I had one that made me crazy - was knocking against the front of the cage where the rear mufflers connect to the over the axle pipes in front of the cage. AS I turned a corner ,..the exhaust system barely moved ,...but it did just enough to make contact with the cage and the pipe attaching flange.

Hey Group,

Exhaust is tight. No one in the trunk. lol

It is the U-Joints on the passenger side. Found the replacement parts for $36 a piece. This should be fun.

Yep.

Lots of JD prior to spanner involvement.

Kids out of earshot as the language will flow, trust me.
