Default coil has no spark

Today I was driving for 2 hrs. No issue. Stopped to get some things then back on the road. After a few min the car started losing power as if I was speeding up and slowing down. then the car shut down. I pulled the coil wire out of the distributor and looked for spark. nothing. my test light shows power at the terminal of the coil when the power ignition is switched on. How do I know if its the coil or something before the coil?

Hi Jordanmc,

So coil has resistance?

If so, it is probably OK.

Did you touch the coil at the time?

They get seriously hot, but scalding hot......

If resistance with ohms meter is OK then I would look at the ignition amplifier.

This is located on the front of the inlet manifold.

Two long bolts secure it to the forward face of the manifold.

Amplifiers are not cheap, however, if you unscrew the four locating screws (easy if fiddly job), you can replace the module which is pretty cheap.

I assume that the engine started after you left it to cool down for a while.

Cheers,

Nigel

Missed that..

So, that part is OK!

Now, watch the tac as you crank,. So does the needle move? I suspect not. In the distributor or amplifier Go from that...

I suspect your Series II has the older OPUS ignition. If so, it won't have the amplifier as mentioned earlier...which is found on the CEI system.

I don't know a thing about the OPUS system, if that's what you have.

Hopefully Grant will see this thread. He knows the system

Cheers

Whoops,

Thanks for noticing Doug!

Sorry jordanmc,

I didn't read your signature with Series 2, so scrap my two bits about ignition amplifier.

HT lead between coil and distributor OK?

Pickup in distributor is OK?

Cheers,

Nigel

This has gone from bad to worse. Engine was removed a last winter to replace a rear main seal. The shop has just informed me the engine needs to come out again. Apparently the distributor crankshaft has failed......
I love the car but can't afford to have then engine pulled again.

Thanks for the answer. The engine starts and works all the time, but is shaking a bit. It looks like it's problem with only one coilwire.
As I said, I have cross changed the coils and spark plugs, and still the problem is with the same cylinder, no matter what I do.
Therefor I think it must have something to do with the power to this spesific cylinder. When I pull out the contacts one by one, the speed changed on all of them, exept number 3 from the front.

Problem solved. Acually it was a contact on one of the fuel injectors who had loosend.
So, now it's ready for many more miles.
