Default ? Fan clutch securing bolt removal

Hi: My plan is to replace the four belts. I've got every bolt removed that I need to with the exception of the fan clutch bolt. It appears to me to be some sort of cover over the hex bolt head. The service manual mentions nothing but the hex head bolt. What should I be doing to remove this "cover" to expose the bolt head? Again, I have everything else unbolted. Thanks in advance for your input. Ren

I can't visualize what you are referring to.

You should have four nuts holding the fan clutch to the water pump and four bolts holding the fan to the fan clutch. None of them have covers of any sort that I can recall.

Anyhow, there's no need to remove the fan clutch to replace the belts.

Cheers

Can't you just slip the belts over the fan blades, with the fan in situ?

Or am I delusional?

I was reading that and thinking S2 set up, single bolt through the hub which sat over a machined snout on the water pump.

Then you say XJ6 1987, so unless someone has fitted a S2 pump/fan assembly, or am I loosing it also.

I had the 'single bolt fan clutch' thought as well, Grant. But that went away circa 1983.

Apologies for not providing photos. I'll take some and post them however I am going to attempt the belt removal without taking of the clutch method. At the risk of sounding dense, how is this accomplished? Is there some partial disassembly involved (I know I have to slacken each belt)? How to I get a belt past the blades? Do I just loop the belt over the blades then pull it out? I assume there is enough room between the front of the blades and the radiator to do this?

Yep.

Off the other pullies, loop around the fan blade, rotate the fan by hand while CAREFULLY working the belt out.

Same for refitting.

4 beers usually makes it as clear as mud.

Slipping the belt over each blade, one at a time was how I did mine. Ian
