Default Fan and fan clutch flew off

Hi again,

I was taking her for a spin yesterday and heard a strange grinding noise under the hood. Got out and antifreeze all over the road. Got her home and looking under the hood I found that the fan and fan clutch were wedged into the radiator. Took it all apart and found the bolt and washer for the fan clutch in the bottom of the shroud. Did some looking through my parts book and found that the washer is supposed to have a hole in it and a roll pin should be fitted through the washer into the water pump shaft. My setup had neither of these. However there is a hole in the water pump shaft to accept the roll pin. I rebuilt this motor several years ago and have no recollection of ever having a roll pin through the washer. I'm guessing the PO had a pump replaced and they left it out and used a plain old washer in place of the original. Or, they had a similar problem and lost the original bolt and washer. Any way, I can't find a replacement. It seems the washer and roll pin are no longer available. Anyone had a similar experience? How do I fix it correctly? It seems a plain old nut and washer will work but for only so long.

Thanks,

Steve

I was about to reply that what you describe is not a standard series 1 arrangement. Then I noticed your car is a coupe with series 1 fenders and bonnet. It looks great but I know nothing about the series 2 fan setup

that is one pretty car!
roll pins are available in auto parts stores. You could even use a Cotter pin.

Mekon,

Sorry for the confusion, Lyons original prototype work on the Coupe was done in '73 on an S1. I believe it was his last design before he retired. I was so taken by the appearance of the prototype, that I decided to replicate it ... I have taken this car to antique automobile shows where the registration requirement is that the car must be stock other than wheels and tires. I have earned trophies in the foreign and exotic classes for this car. The judges are all "trained" judges but lack the in depth knowledge that most Jaguar enthusiasts have when it comes to these marks. They don't catch that the car is a mish mash of 73 and 76 sheet metal, they just see the beauty of the design, which is a tribute to Lyons original vision.

Thanks,

Steve

Jose,

I did find a roll pin at SNG Barrat, but still cannot find the washer. The washer I have is too large. When installed, it clamps up against the fan clutch housing instead of the bearing, keeping the fan permanently engaged. If I had some dimensions I would have one machined. I'm also thinking about using red permatex for a belt and suspenders approach.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Steve, I am not familiar with this setup either. You might need to machine the washer you have, or machine one from scratch. My two Jags do not have this setup.

steve, it's exactly the setup I have on my stock 77XJC water pump/ fan. the washer is thicker than your typical hardware store washer. I really don't want to take mine apart and measure it. maybe someone on this forum has one off and can dimension it for you, then have it made: not a big job.

Geneo,

You are right, machining a washer is no big deal, getting the dimensions is the hard part. I may have to do a little guess work on the thickness, I can approximate the outside diameter and measure the roll pin placement. Add a little red permatex when I put it back together for insurance. Then a prayer, for good measure....

Thanks,

Steve
