Default Fan motor relay

having a tuff time finding a replacement relay ( engine cooling fan motor relay) the orange color , 5 prong . is it possible to use a substitute relay to do the job ??? it's for a 86 xj6

You mean the red relay just above the cooling fan? Mine smokes and blows the fan fuse when I put one in. Also looking for a replacement. Most stores have nothing. Will advise if I find one.

yup that's the one , I've looked and looked , if you can find one I beleive they are $100
my old one may work I will find out tomorrow

Hi Gray cat,
Bit confused as to why you require a relay if you think the one you already have may work.

Do you have a overheat problem or are you not seeing the fan operate?.

You've gotta be kidding me? That's ridiculous. Autozone here in SA have the relays at around the equivalent of $4ea but they just don't have one with the right layout.

when we took out the radiator , the relay smoked and a one of the stems is now loose. We are assuming the relay is now toast. once the radiator is back in we can test it

A typical "Bosch Style" accessory relay with the usual 30-85-86-87-87a terminal designations will work. Very common.

Thanks Doug ! I will send you a pic of the gray cat , which is now two tone silver / gray patterned after a 58' Rolls-Royce

Thanks Doug. Will pick one up and see if it solves my non-operational yet brand new auxiliary fan.
