Question Gas Leak - 1981 Jag XJ6

I just filled up my both gas tanks, now the left tank appears to be leaking, a drip, drip, drip of pure gas below the trunk of the car, very close to the exhaust tail pipe.

I can not visually see the EXACT cause.

Do Jag tanks just...start leaking...?

I will monitor the leak and see if it stops when the tank empties to a certain level.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Looks like another trip to the mechanic.

Yup, just like any other steel tank!!!

But, as the system has so many rubber hoses and connections, that would be the place to start looking.

Easiest, in the back part of the spare tire well.

Thank you Carl! I will investigate. one other dumb question. You know the button on the dash that toggles the fuel tanks. If the button is PRESSED IN, I am draining the left or right tank? Obviously I would like to empty that left tank?

Oh, of course if it continues to leak it will let me know!!

before you get too carried away, check the drain plug. Mine started leaking and that's all it was. A loose plug.

I always forget

But the side of the switch has either an "R" or an "L" which can be seen when the switch is out.

Unless the print has worn off, of course

Cheers

well you guys helped me a lot: I just started digging around, taking apart the area around the spare wheel and saw all the hoses. I learned a lot. Then I jacked up the car a bit, and looked underneath, found the leak. Not a tank! A small tube (copper I think), directly below the left exhaust pipe. You can see the gas spraying from it her. I hope that won't be too expensive to replace.

Yup, I implanted that in my mind. "LEFT IN, RIGHT OUT".

Cuz, as Doug says, my markings are worn away!!!

Remove the bad section. Two fixes.

1. Use FI hose and clamps to bridge the gap.

2. Splice in new steel with flared couplings.

Over kill if it is a vent or return line. But, on point is a high PSI feed.
Err on the safest side.

But, a whole lot better than a rusted out tank!!!
