hazard flasher lights
Hi.
The Hazard flasher lights in my S1 XJ6 didn't work, so I bought a new relay hoping that was all it would take to fix it. It turned out however it was the rocker switch causing the problem. I cleaned it up and now it works like new. The new relay however caused a new phenomenon, now the red HAZARD light in the dash board remains on at all times. When the switch is turned on it flashes in keeping with the turn signal lights, when the switch is turned off it's on steady. Ignition on or off no difference, allways on. According to my schematics the relay is the only thing in the loop able to open and close the circuit of this light. Could it be a faulty relay? Any other ideas? When I put the old relay back in the turn signal lights work as intended after I fixed the switch, but now the red HAZARD light never comes on. No biggie, but it would be cool to sort it out so all the lights work correctly.
Regards
Tor

Yeah, I suspect the relay also. I bought it from SNG Barrat uk, and sent them an e-mail a few days ago. Haven't heard back from them yet.

Hi Tor
I don't know if it the same on SI as on SIII,
But if it is, it has to be a faulty switch.
Lampe no: 152
Switch no: 153
Relay no: 25/154
I hope this will help your troubleshooting.

what I meant was that it sounds like no matter if you use the old or the new relay, the problem is in the wires connecting to the relay.
For some unknown reason, Jaguar cars seem to always have issues with the emergency flashers starting with the model 420 of 1967.
In the Series 3 XJ cars, the switch mounting itself is a problem, and the wiring to the switch was incorrectly depicted in the Workshop Manuals. It took a Jaguar enthusiast to finally resolve the wiring.

Hi again. The wiring is entirely different from the S3 looks like. The wiring in my car is correct as per attached schematic. As you can see the hazard flasher unit (relay) is the only "switch" that can activate the hazard light. Power on the wire with the inline fuse is constant. The switch works correctly, so I still suspect the relay.

Ideas from almost inept auto electrician.
1. Carefully identify and compare the posts on old vs new relay. Some look the same, but are slightly different.
2. Set up a test circuit.
1. Power leg
2. trigger leg
3. ground leg
4. load leg.
If it doesn't work right or is the wrong one, return it or dump it.
I use a lot of generic relays in my car. Cheap for a decent 30 or 40 amp unit.
