Default Horrible rear end noise....Ideas??

Today, I pulled out my driveway, and started driving up my street. within 100 meters, my jag (S3 xj6) started making a strange noise. It was sort of a click click BANG, rattle rattle rattle noise. I immediatly turned around and gently came back home. I was driving gently, not heavy footed at all. I took it out in the street again later to try and really get the noise and see if I could identify what it is and where it is coming from. I seems to make less noise under power, and make a couple of snappy bangs when I take off the power. There is a constant ticky clicky clacky noise as well. Definanty not tyres. It is something in the driveline. Fairly confidant that it is after the transmition. The car drive and feels fine. I can't feel the noise, just hear it. it changes gear with no problem, still drives smooth etc.
Does any one have any ideas as to what it could be? My guess (and only an uneducated guess at that) is it is either the prop shaft bearing or maybe a rear wheel bearing. I have not been able to raise the back end and spin wheels or anything like that yet.

Thoughts people??

Cheers,
Richard.

Prop shaft universal joint, of which you have 3.

Halfshaft universal joint, of which there are 2 per shaft.

Prop shaft centre bearing.

On a ledge with this one.

The half shafts have a tin dust shield at each end, covering the said joints, and clamped to the shaft with a simple hose clamp. They come loose, and rattle and clatter, and generally make a noise. We mostly remove them.

I would agree with Grant and check the shields sometimes when greasing the uni's it is easier to undo the clamp and slide it backto get to the nipple.may be not tightend properly.I had it happen on my series i made a real clatter.

Cheers Ray

Default Ray...

Ray (on edge) ,or any other Kiwis, do you know of any series 3 scrappers? I am thinking of getting one for 2 reasons. One, for parts (obviously ) and two, for my son to pull a part as a learning experience and hopefully help him with his learning and behavior problems. I live in Masterton but can travel to wellington area.

I recently took apart my rear assembly. I was missing 1 of the covers for the joints. What I noted that the joint without cover was bone dry, while the others were properly greased. So the covers are there with a reason. I would rather tight them properly, than discard them.

First you have to make sure if this is the issue of course.

Well, I have to confess. I didn't follow the old saying of "If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it". I finally got up the courage to jack my jag up, and have a good look under to see if I could find out what was wrong with her. It turns out that it was a combination of things. The first thing is that the right hand joint cover (diff end) was a bit loose, and that the exhaust was hanging a bit low and it was clashing and catching on the cover as it tried to rotate. Now, the 'don't fix what ain't broke' thing comes from the fact the exhaust was hanging low was my fault! a few days earlier, I removed the rear silencers to see if there was much difference in exhaust note (looking for a deeper growl). When I put them back, I didn't quite put the right hand one back on properly. So now, she is back on the road, and as happy as can be. YAYYY!!!
