Default Ignition Switch Re-assembly

We pride ourselves in fixing something instead of buying a new one. Sure I could have bought a new ignition switch but rather fix the old one. However... I can't get it back together and have the "start" position spring back using the coiled up spring on the inside. I'm sure it's just a matter of getting the spring extension tucked behind something but for the life of me can't figure it out. I know my Band of Brothers and Sister have done this before. What am I doing wrong?

PS - I knew this little stubby screwdriver would come in handy for something someday!

I posted a newsletter .pdf file from the Nashville Tennessee Jaguar Club which shows how to rebuild these ignition switches. Try to find it in Search and if no luck I will post it here.

I spent an hour searching on everything I could think of and no luck. There's got to be some sort of trick to the spring back of it in the "start" position.

I gotta believe that if my ignition switch was as crapped up as mine was, that there may be a lot of XJ6's out there with electrical gremlins that may be attributed to the ignition switch. I was getting low voltage readings all over the place. Hopefully when I get this back together, that will be a thing of the past.

ir is a Series 2 switch, so it has aged. One symptom happens while driving or idling; the engine dies so people start troubleshooting the fuel system, the distributor, the electronics, everything but the ignition switch.

There are! Faulty ignition switches have been cropping fairly often up for the last 10-12 years or so, maybe longer.

Cheers

Ditto!!!

All manner of electrical oddities went away when I replaced mine.

Kudos to those that can fix them in lieu of replacing them.

Grant described working in a bag. Too late for me. Little stuff just vanished when I opened mine,

A look at the S57 schematic shows how mny functions go through the switch.

That white wire travels extensively.

As it turns out, my switch went back together rather well and did indeed spring back from the start position. So... there is no trick to putting the switch back together, except for the little ball and spring lining up. Mark positions of all items before taking them apart will ensure going back together the same. Take pics. Lubricate with dielectric grease lightly. Sliding contacts like that. Point to point contacts, not so much (like relays). Don't be afraid to take switches/relays/plugs and jacks, etc apart using great care obviously. LOTS of electrical gremlins can be alleviated by clean electrical contact. I used to be a Field Engineer for a big computer company back in the day. And I earned a reputation of a real sharp shooter in New England. And mostly what I did was travel to troubled computers (generation 2 with plug in circuit boards - 2 flip flops to a board - oh the old days) and pulled each and every card, cleaned the contacts and reseated them. Problem went away. I'm a Hero! Pretty basic. Same situation with our 40-50 year old cars.

So very true. but, I've not opened a desk top box in decades. At times I did OK. Others far from it,

But, the connect/disconnect system has worked in a lot of circuitry.

Many good parts have been tossed when new ones have been installed. Not the part, merely the connection.

But, in the case of my ignition switch. The NOs unit from David Boger is much tighter and smooth. the old one loose and notchy.....

I do have a can of odds and ends for Jaguar ignition switch. Why ?
I have no logical response.

Kudos for making the old one work...

excellent! What I love about Lucas switches is that they can be opened and fixed. The same goes for wiper, turn signal, neutral safety, power window, interior lights, and headlight switches.

I remember the ignition issue I dealt with...sometimes wouldn’t start...sometimes would just shut off while driving. Loose wires. I took it apart cold turkey and tried troubleshooting on my own w help from this forum. Somehow I got it working again. Just to be sure I had my mechanic look at it and he said it’s a miracle car didn’t catch on fire as a result of my fix. We wound up swapping it out for a new one
