Jag emblem
Not sure what you're working on but the various Series IIIs I've worked on and/or owned they're glued on and just (carefully) pull off. There's no need to go in from the backside

The parts book shows a cap for each of the two pins, that presses on from behind the panel. Don't know how you access the backside—removal of splash shield behind the front wheel, maybe?
Andrew.
Andrew.
I stand corrected, thank you. My brain was thinking 'trunk lid emblem'
The fender emblems have little pegs that are a press fit into barrel clips..... which themselves are pressed into the holes in the fenders. The emblem can be gently 'levered' away from the fender with care take to protect the paint and not break the pegs! No need to do anything from behind the fender
Again, my experience is with Series III cars. Not sure about earlier models.

If the pegs of the emblems are not staying seated in the holes in the wing/fender you could get some spares and deliberately break off the "pegs"
and use double sided "emblem tape" to stick them back in place. Otherwise remove the wing / fender to gain access to the lower inside area where the pins protrude through the sheet metal. Then install the emblem and the retaining caps. Finding these "retainers" is the problem. The trim on the boot lid around the license plate area is attached in the same manner.
Personally I would use the double sided tape method. If you remove the wing/fender you will probably find more "issues" to contend with,,, i.e. rust at that same area but on the inside of the panel.

Another way.
I have a tube of "Emblem Cement". I used it four times.
1.To install a V8 emblem above the XJ6 emblem on the boot*
2. To reaffx the chrome "finisher" that had come adrift on the boot lid.
3. To affix a new passenger side mirror over the crazed one that was almost useless. I suspect a casualty of a car wash that I failed to notice.
4. To affix a new mirror on my daughter's Passat. Known issue to the Passat forum. The original merely departed, on the road, of course...
