Has anyone used these rear gears for their jag? Converted lump or stock?
Just wondering because those 427 gears sound good with my 700r4... hmmm
they seem inexpensive enough to be worth changing the old ones to something a bit better suited for the application

If it were me I would be putting my attention into the 700r4 Sungear, sprag etc these are weak spots with that trans although with numerically higher gear set would take some of the stress off of it.
2.88 gears and a 4000 lb car puts a lot of stress on the trans.

My brother used to use 427s as 1/8 mile drag gears. Engine tops out pretty quick in a short distance, but not at all good for 'normal' driving.

Really depends on your setup...Originally Posted by sunchip

4.27 is a bit deep for a 700R4 and best suited to high winders. 1st gear will be go quick and 2nd will be a steep change. I have had both 3:31 and 3:54 gears the the back end of a XJ6 with a 700R4, 1800 stall and 406SBC with TPI using a 219 @ .050 camshaft. For that setup the 3:31 was perfect in every way. The car lept off the line and had a very sedate cruise. I did update to a shorter runner intake the the loss of torque necessitated a gear change to 3.54.
If you have a 2.88 you will also need to change the diff carrier as the 2.88 unit will have the wrong offset. You can use any dana 44 carrier but must use the Dana side bearing not the jag ones. Good thing...becasue Dana 44 side bearing are 1/4 the price. I used an Auburn street locker, it's great! Cracking open one of these diffs and setting it up right is quite a job best left to the experienced.
As for those Jegs gears, call and make sure they are the quiet type.
