Default Keys

I have one key to my car. It doesn't seem to work on the boot. Luckily it's unlocked... Should the ignition key work in the boot, or should there be a separate key?

I have a key for the ignition and driver door.
I have a key for the gas caps which also locks the passenger door and glove box.
I have a key for the trunk/boot.

It looks like Jaguar played musical locks with their keys & locks.

I never even thought of trying the keys in the fuel caps, I just assumed it was missing. No, none of them fit.

If you want gas cap keys the locks are easily removed to make keys (or re-pin the lock).

I had my Series 3 fuel cap locks re-pinned for the door key, an easy job as Elinor says.

My door key also fits the boot, but none of my keys fits the glove box!

I actually have 3 keys. I just thought the other 2 were for gas cap and glove box only. I I tried them and the one for the glove box works on the boot. Its fairly small, so didn't think it was the one. I tried it and it works.

So, I have 1 key for the ignition and doors, one key for the boot and glove box and one key for the fuel caps.

Assuming a Series III, the car came from the factory with the following three types of key: ignition key, fitting ONLY the ignition lock (largest, black plastic head); a key for door/boot/glove box/fuel filler (i.e., everything BUT ignition) (all-metal with convex head); and a third key for doors and fuel fillers only (all-metal with concave head).

The factory logic for this scheme has largely been lost over time though, and from what I've read quite a few people have done away with it, either by wearing out the keys/locks or by re-keying to preference. As well many original keys have certainly been lost and replaced. So yours could absolutely vary.

Hope this helps.

Andrew.

Update: just got on a computer where I can read your sig (mobile app didn't show it) and see yours is a Series I, for which the above scheme most probably doesn't apply!
