According to the auction house (Coys) it is a world record price. They didn't stated for which model (range) exactly. But looking at the price I thought it was a correct statement.

Seems crazy, but not if you really do want a mint condition XJ Series 3 from a good year.

Wow. That makes my 16,000 mile, one owner XJ40 seem like an absolute bargain.

Having also had a Series III I am confident in making the statement that the XJ40 is a better car all round, but.......... it doesnt have the heart and soul and specialness of a Series III so I doubt they will ever achieve the level of admirers the Series IIIs generate.

Default sale?

I didn't finish my restoration yet but I would not sale my '76 Series II XJ12 for less than ...NO, NO!... at least double or more...
Just for curiosity, I have been looking for a similar one ... NONE! There are not good units... all of them have issues... poor restorations, cheap paint, cheap engine rebuild, cheap upholstery, ...

Just my paint material was more than +4k., upholstery +10k, wood and steering wheel +3k, plus engine, plus plating all the hardware, plus chromes, new radiator, ac, brakes, plus the bumpers with all the extras for the Euro conversion,... +15k, and all the work we did (this restoration could cost +300K in a restoration shop) ... I don't even want to put all my bills together...

Bottom line is ... all these cars are cheap because if you take one... you are going to need to invest on it... and if you already want a nice unit you are going to pay the real cost.

Lots of ebay Jaguars are not ready to pass the emissions in the 50 states or import to some European countries... I'm doing my own research to find how many 'legal' 1976 XJ12 there are running in California... for the moment I didn't find any other one.

NOTE: When I was restoring the engine, I ask for help to two very well known Jaguar independent shops here in San Diego... I'm still waiting for they answer... We didn't even talk about the money... they said NO!!

In my opinion you are going to see the prices going up and up for the good units otherwise you will get a bucket of rust, with old or cheap upholstery, messy electrics, and a tired engine...

Debbie:

Wowee, really big bucks. I never have been able to stay upo with the increased costs of everything. In concept or pocket book!!!

As to CA Smog stuff and Jaguars or other "different" critters, the following comes to mind.

1. All the original emession stuff installed at Brown's lane must be present
2. It must function.
3. The engine and it's tune must be reasonably healthy so as to pass the sniff test
4. The values of the sniff test arte electronicly compared to set values in Sacramento.
5, As to the visual, different techs see different things...

I wonder if it's still rusty in all the places you can't see?
I'd rather buy a properly restored one.
One for the collector methinks.

You can paint almost everywhere with an inspection camera and a paint tub nozzle. It's available with spray or gun. I've used both. http://www.eastwood.com/internal-frame-coating-w-spray-nozzle.html you have to open some small holes to access to some areas.
