Lug nut compatibility
I am going to go replace the old 15" wire wheels (broken spokes) on my 87' Ser III with 16" wheels from an XJ40. The new wheels are aluminum and I need to get some matching lug nuts for them.
Wondering if the stock XJ40 lug nuts will fit my Series III since they both came with aluminum wheels from the factory?

AFAIK the stud (lug) diameter and thread size is the same. However, the nut shape can vary depending on the wheel. My old 1980 Series 3 nuts for steel wheels were completely different to those for the later 'pepper-pot' alloy wheels, but both the same thread.
Are the pepper wheel lugs flat or are they tapered? It's good to know the thread sizes are all the same.
re: the old wires, I was going to toss them because one has broken spokes and the front two are rusted from road salt. I looked into salvaging them but refinishing wasn't worth the expense.

doghead08: I think the rear wheels are in the best shape but they still have a little surface rust on them. I can send a pic if you send me an email. Are you local to Northern California?

I think you are correct about the taper. I ended up getting a set of used lug nuts from a 1994 XJ40 -- new ones from the dealer are way expensive!. That should work well since the threads are the same for those years and the nuts are guaranteed to match the wheels.
Now I just need a few missing center caps and I'll be set. Too bad those center caps are expensive also.
