Default need advise

First off, thanks to all who resopnded to my first thread, "smitten", I looked at and drove the car (1983 XJ6) this last Sunday and am still very interested, but I have some reservations. There is some rust around the windshield, one area is rusted through, and there is some rust starting at the bottom of the driver door, toward the back. The rest of the car is very straight and has no other signs of rust especially the bottom since it's covered in oil! The black paint is somewhat faded, but decent and the brakes seem ok. It has 190000 and has had one rebuild about 50000 miles ago, but the engine and tranny seem real bad which is why I would consider a chevy conversion. Interior is good, VINYL, but goodand the dash is somewhat cracked. The asking price is well below $3000, which is why I'm still interested. Long winded, I know, but ANYadvise would be GREATLY appreciated!
Also, are there major differences the 1983 and 1984 XJ6?

Faded paint, 190k miles, bad engine and trnas, vinyl upholstery, rust around windhshield....
This sounds like a $200 parts car.

You can do MUCH better for $3000. Shop around

Sorry, but that's the long and short of it.

No major differences between 83 and 84

Cheers

Rust around windshield = CHECK THE FLOORPANS. Remove the carpet & look. Not just a glance under the car.

On the contrary these cars should not leak. It may be a running joke about Jag's & that they "should" leak...but ummm NO. Oil is NOT a "rust inhibitor"

IIWY, I would find another. You can find chev swapped cars for under $3000.

I know it is a bit of a drive but check this out..it may still be available

Clinster, may I ask where you are located?
I found my 87 xj6 on Craigslist along with a TON of others at more than reasonable prices. In fact, there is one not far from me that is an 83 and no rust holes for $350. Definitely worth looking around, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
