Default New to forum: 1971 Mark 1 XJ6

Just purchased my first used Jag. $2750. A bit of a barn find. Interior is a bit rough and 4.2 straight 6 badly needs a tune up. No rust.

My other car is a '66 Volvo 122S which has a quirky charm of its own. But I have a feeling this XJ6 is something I will pamper and cherish.

Good score Adrian. What are your plans for her? If it was mine I'd be looking to keep as much of the original patina as possible, & that includes staying with the Jag mechanicals. But that's only my opinion, & there are plenty here who'll encourage you to mod it into something that only vaguely resembles a Jag. Neither side is "right" & both camps get along with mutual respect (& a fair bit of good natured ribbing) on this site. So whatever way you want to go, you'll find the best advice here.

The first gen XJ6 is just beautiful. I love the original grille and slim bumper Maybe those modern big grille models are actually reflecting a genuine, traditional Jaguar cue.

Welcome aboard. It sure looks good, even if white is not my choice of colors for cars !!!
That "to each his/her own" concept that thrives here.

A tune up ? A very subjective phrase that is used to cover minor or major issues.
I sure hope it is the former..

Symptoms??? Folks here can interpret.

Again, welcome aboard.

Thanks for the quick responses and welcomes.

Usually, I would agree with you about white cars. However--there are a few designs, such as the Lotus Esprit, Volvo P1800, the XJS and the XJ6 that I believe look fantastic in white. If I remember, The Saint's Volvo was white as was James Bond's Esprit. But like the Japanese say: ten men, ten tastes.

My plans: Originality. It would be nice to get the engine up to optimal spec. It has twin stainless exhausts. Not sure if they came like that from the factory. I guess you need triple SU's to get up to 250 hp? Car has twin Strombergs at present.

So my goal is to create a nice cigar lounge on wheels.

Thank goodness for that! There are more than enough modded coupes around already (no offence meant to the many Lumpers here). & having one in top spec original trim will do no harm to it's future values either. Please keep us up to date with your progress, as I can't wait to see what you do with it, & more gratuitous shots of one of Coventry's cutest gals always go down well here too.

Drove the car home yesterday. Engine is in rough shape as I suspected. Good oil pressure but bit of gurgling and black smoke from exhausts when accelerating from a stop. Car has 102,000 miles on the odometre.

Did a very quick compression test on the first cylinder (#1?): 120 dry/150 wet. Left the other plugs in so I'll do it properly and report back. I have a '73 engine and transmission that came with the car, so will test that too.

I used to own a 121 Volvo, it was my first classic car. Mine was a '72 model with a B20 engine. I had a lot of fun restoring it, although not everything turned out perfectly

Wish you a lot of fun with the series 1

If you are asking, #1 is at the back of the engine, #6 is at the front.

More of a rhetorical question, but thanks. I haven't had chance to read the Haynes manual that came with the car.

I realize that I have been missing out on one of motoring's great luxury car experiences. The car glides along as you sit in a big leather chair, looking over that great expanse of walnut and chrome-rimmed gauges. Wonderful.

So Clarke, you have a straight 6 from a series 3, but you took off the FI and installed carbs? I have a '73 motor that I might just re-do the rings and send the head off to a machine shop.

Since I first got mine 3 1/2 years ago a few parts I ordered didn't fit, we just assumed it had a few upgrades like spin on oil filter etc.
It was only 15 months ago when the engine needed a rebuild that I researched the engine numbers and found it was an S3 engine, same, but different on a few smaller details.

When I sourced the off the shelf rebuilt short motor it was also an S3 block. Still works the same with the S1 set up.

Welcome, nice looking car. If you have a rust free S1 you are ahead of the curve, everything else is doable , especially with the help available here.
