Probably will flatbed since if it is draining just sitting there, once the pump pressures up I expect it to spray all over and drain before I get very far

Other idea is disconnect low/high hoses and just let the pump spin empty. Probably will do that. I wont trust the pump anyway so let it cook!

Saginaw's are easy to rebuild. If you decide, get the kit with the shaft bushing. I rebuilt the '71 that came with the BBC I swapped in place of the 12

For those following the action - ha ha - I decided to just disconnect the hoses from the pump and drive the car 20 minutes to my storage unit. Thankfully I decided to put a large baggie zip tied over the hise ends because there was about a quart of fluid in the baggie when I got to the unit. I guess residual fluid in the hoses and rack was forced out by driving

Disconnected the old pump and will clean outside in the morning and hang it from a tree limb and fill her with Type F....and see where the bloody leak is. But I strongly suspect without the torque of the belt on the shaft she wint leak just sitting there

Will update soon with this experiment!

Just so I understand correctly, Randy, you drove 20 minutes to the storage unit Arm Strong?
Engine not turning the pump?
So you took the belt off too?
Otherwise I can't understand how you got away with a dry spinning pump for 20 minutes and didn't kill it.

That same drive belt is for the water pump also (if it's a 4.2L).

Belt was on so water pump was spinning and I may have cooked P/S pump but I dont plan to use it and would not trust another rebuild of it anyway. $100 for a flatbed or sacrifice the pump..life's choices😊

Jose is sending me a pump to use

Side question. Anyone have a source for the pale green O-ring that is on the high pressure hose fitting that screws into the pump? Mine was new but really would like another new for this go around

Randy, light green o-rings are those used on AC/refrig. systems. They should be easy to find at anywhere repairing those systems. That's where I would start. Ian

Any auto parts store has those green O rings in an assortment package for cheap money. It's usually near the A/C recharge stand. Autozone, Pep Boys, etc.

Update..got the green O-rings at Autozone. Laughed cuz the guy said they just took A/C products off the floor. I said fine please check where ya put em! He had to crawl up on a giant ladder and root around..but found a pack

I finally looked at leaky pump I removed. The leak is at the bottom of the unit where it is connected to the resevoir unit..so based on the exploded parts pix the biggest O-ring (maybe 4" diameter) appears to have failed or something

I ordered a good used unit from David at EverydayXJ but will also ask Coventry West to make good and admit a failed rebuild and send me a new one. We' ll see 😊

Will post pix tomorrow-ish

Sent pump back to Coventry West. Still awaiting their analysis about what went wrong. Said it was covered under warranty so hope for a new rebuild

A-holes at Fedex finally acknowledged my claim and sending me a check. But even though I sent clear doc
Showing $250 core due, they said my default insurance was $100. So for $150 they have lost a customer for life and I will bad mouth them going fwd

Cant wait to get her back together ☹️ Fixing her is fun but wanna drive her!!

I sympathize, FedEx are absolutely useless in France. I always specify NOT FedEx.

Another "exciting" update.. ha ha -

From Coventry West - "Yes, we have received it and I believe we’ve already shipped out a replacement or that it’ll be ready to ship today. The cause for the leak was due to a warped/bent pump housing that pinched the seal."

But if you recall, it did not leak until I snugged up the belt. And I know many of you might think.. "Well, you cranked it way too hard!", but indeed I know I did not. It still had a decent amount of flex in it. But I will none the less be very moderate in my tension this time. I suppose I will just believe that the pump housing was bent/warped and the slight additional tension was just the ticket to expose this.

Hopefully arrives by Thanksgiving week since I have a nice stretch of time off.

Joy restored!!

Got rebuilt pump from Coventry and installed pulley and tensioner

Installed today on block pivot mount, connected belt and attached belt and low/hi pres hoses. All went well.

Filled res and unhooked coil and rolled motor for a few secs turning lock to lock. Then topped off, attached coil and started motor.

Lock to lock about 10x and topped res. A bit scared cuz fluid was foamy and lots of groany noises.

But after a few dozen more lock to locks and topping off she quieted down and no leaks ...so far!!

So happy to be driving her on my long holiday wknd off work!

Happy Turkey Day!!

Randy
