As the older style power window switches (push on tab style) are getting rarer to find, I think I've found a solution. I hope. The new style with the plug into brass pins are available new in bunches on EBay. However, the new style is a bit smaller length and width than the old style. And won't fit into the facia plate on the rear of the console. So... with a hack saw I cut off the bottom off an old style switch, and with a flat file, filed out the interior of the old style switch a bit. Enough to slide fit the new style switch into it. So, it can now fit entire assembly into the console. Now I have to figure out how to match the old style wiring to the new style plug and not blow a fuse. I'm assuming the wiring diagrams will help me out here. I also assume that because there are a total of six rear electrical connections to both switches, that they both work the same. Any suggestions are welcome. See pics:
Hack saw off bottom of old style switch File out inside of top part of old switch Push new style switch down into old style switch New style mated up to old style top New style prongs out the bottom Now have to figure out wiring to mate to old style switch wiring.
I'll donate this diagram to the cause, i did something similar to the rear switches in my S2 , i fitted after market 2 way rocker switches, made a thin tin plate with cut outs for the switches & mounted on the top & covered with vinyl, rear switches only use 4 wires fed from front.
XJTom - Dang! I thought for sure your excellent color diagram was going to match my Series II wiring, but it didn't. And the Series III switches are labeled in the back 1-8, not 1-6 as your diagram is. So, I'm still trying to match up your diagram with the Series III diagram (see below) and my current Series II wiring on the back of the old style switches.
that wiring on the back of that switch is for a 1987-88 XJ6, i have a diagram for it if you want but it won't match an S2....Don't try and match colour, match position of wiring to old wiring, can be done with a multi meter

Reason: update
Bill you should have contacted me before, I have a number of Series 2 XJ parts including all those switches and a very nice upper center console section.
