I have a 72 series 2 4.2l. I have a problem. My fuel filter I think makes this clicking noise and now the car won't stay running. Would this be a good clue to get the fuel system cleaned out as was off road for a while???

 

Tamehana, welcome to the forum! Please introduce yourself giving a few details in the "new members" thread at the top of the list. Your ticking may well be the fuel pump struggling to get fuel from a tank which may be empty. A blocked fuel filter will not result in the fuel pumps ticking as they should stop if the line is blocked.

 

It has had this issue for the past couple of months but I was still able to drive. But when ever that clicking noise was loud it would play up. There has definitely been enough gas in one of the tanks. I did run the right tank empty by accident and since then has been worst. Any ideas of what to do next as is on the side of the road as didn't make it home and don't have much $ to spend on ot.

Try draining the fuel tanks - but make sure they are nearly empty. Even with the gauge showing E, you may still have 2 gallons in the tank. If you have never drained the tank, you will be amazed at what comes out. Use thread tape on the bung when you screw it back in. As said, the ticking is most likely the pump struggling to pick up fuel. Could be a blockage at the tank or in the fuel pump.

 

While in there you might think about putting filters between the tanks and fuel pump in addition to the stock filter. That will make it easier next time. Also, while tanks are drained it is an excellent time to replace the rubber fuel lines in the boot. Many posts here about that. See Doug's post about using marine grade tubing.
