I'm still considering some kind of automated car lift. I had looked at a two post lift, but that meant a permanent post close to the center of the 2 car garage.
I just saw this portable lift system called the QuickJack BL-5000SLX. They lift up to 5000 lbs. and lock in position once raised. They seem to give about 2 ft. of clearance to the ground once elevated.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of lift? For the price of $1500 CAN, they fit my budget nicely.
They will be used on a 1985 S3 XJ6.
I bought a pair of these about 5 years ago as they looked like a Really Good idea!
They ARE a really good idea IF:
If you don't need to get under the car from the side as the rails get in the way there.
If you have a place out of the way to store them when not in use.
If you're sure you have enough room front to back so your car doesn't run into anything when fully raised.
If you have the patience to set them up properly Every Single Time you want to raise the car.
(I find this to be the most tedious and time consuming part)
Being a mere woman I found the couplings a bit hard to connect initially, especially after oil is properly in all the lines because they are Leakless, which means they Do Not Leak at connection/disconnection.
But I now have a tool that makes that chore easy and almost fun.
One would have to work Really hard to make one of these units fall on you as it automatically resets the safeties.
I Highly recommend these things!

Many thanks for you very detailed reply. One concern I have is supporting the car only on the jacking points, but I suppose 4 jack stands as a backup would be a good idea. I jacked an E-type once and the jacking point just disappeared into the monocoque.
Based on you praise, I'm going to bite the bullet!
Thanks again, Ian
Really depends on what you're doing. For me a quality jack and 4 six ton jack stands is the safest and quickest way, I do lots of engine out work were I need lots of side access. Lots of pinch points on these small and mid rise lifts too. I had a mid rise... Basically useless for anything but wheels off jobs so I sold it for a small loss and went back to jack stands.
You can make you own custom height wheel cribs for about 50$ even at today's inflated lumber prices.
I'm over hitting the buy button.

This is a question for ANYONE who owns/uses the QuickJack lift on a Jaguar XJ6 (SIII in particular). My girlfriend
bought me the 5000TL but after doing the measurements to determine model, I wonder if the 5000TLX is more what I need.
So.... for our XJ6's, has anyone successfully/safely used just the 5000TL?

Why have I never thought of that? We've got a joiner building a new dormer on our home at the moment. Loads of spare wood and I bet he'd do this for me in an hour...
