Radial/trailing arm removal
Alright - confirming and closing this out. At least for this 1987 Series III XJ6, you do have to remove the right hub nut (15/16") in order to free the brace, allow the shock shaft to pull free, and thereby release the bolt for the radial arm. *whew*
I didn't figure it out before I took a few hammer swings and gummed up the shaft unfortunately, so David Boger to the rescue with a new shaft.

Couple of choices:
- take the large nut off and slide the long shock bolt/brace out more
- take the small nut off the end of the shock bolt, slide the bolt in slightly to clear the brace, tap the brace down slightly to clear the shock bolt
- in a normal world, the long shock bolt should slide through the hole in the brace with maybe a little twisting and turning on the remaining small nut. From your picture, you may have bent the brace a little as you were hammering on the long bolt. Try to hammer it back straight.
- remember, the long bolt doesn't have to come completely out of the control arm, only enough for the shock to swing out of the way
This shouldn't be considered a rabbit hole. You haven't even stepped off the highway, into the field, and walked over to the brush where the rabbit holes grow. Hang in there.

Closing this out, as I got it all back together today. The bushing removal was a bit of an adventure, involving a 12 ton press and a lot more propane torch than I expected, but everything came out, went back in, and bolted back to the car, so it's a victory!
Thanks to all for the helpful ideas, stories, and pictures!
