Conical ended lug nuts match a conical hole. The nuts centre the wheel, usually referred to as lug centric. This is normal for steel wheels.
T-shaped nuts bolt down on to flats in the wheel. The wheel is centered by the hub -the hole in the center of the wheel and the hub should match each other and fit closely together. It's called hub centric and usual for alloys.
There are other systems, but they aren't so common. I think Mercedes use domed lug nuts that need some special care when tightening

You have it correct. I Put the tear drop spare on the front this morning and you can wiggle the wheel. The Dayton wire lugs bottom out before that are tight. So now I need to find a set of lugs that fit the tear drop wheel.
