S3 XJ6 Rear Silencer replacement
Hello, the Serv. Man. says to remove the silencer SS trim, seperate the silencer from the over-axle pipe, slide the silencer forward to disengage the rear mount rubber. Replace mount.
So, my question is, is it possible to replace the mount without seperating the silencer from the axle pipe and fandangle the silencer about to reach the mount? Once the SS trim is removed, is there enough un-mounted movement to achieve this?
Firstly, I have removed the grub screw but cannot even release the trim pipe! Is there a trick regarding the trim removal other than heat?
Also, are the over-axle pipes SS or mild?

over-the-axle pipes are SS if original.
the mount bracket nut(s) can be reached in the trunk when you remove the carpeting.
lots of rust-busting fluid to free the tailpipe, then to turn it with a rubber band tool like they use to free an oil filter.
