At last I have started my long term project of converting my XJ6 to manual gearbox. To this end I have bought a 1970 manual o/d car and am removing parts. Yesterday I removed the clutch pedal assembly. Of course, the pivot is rusted and I need to drive the pin out I have removed the retaining screw/pin but the shaft does not seem to want to move. I am very afraid of busting this aluminium housing as it is really made of that scarce alloy "unobtainium - if I break this down the drain goes the whole project.
Any tips?
Can you get a product called Evaporust in Australia? It's an iron chelating (not cheating!) agent that chemically converts the rust and makes it water soluable. It frees up things that are rusted together very nicely, but it can take a day or two of being immersed in the solution.
Edit: This looks like the stuff: https://www.evapo-rust.com.au/
It works as advertised, although when soaking I usually keep the container covered, as it will evaporate and go a bit gummy. It works best above 15°C.
Thanks all. with sufficient heat it started to drift out. Worried that I had splayed the end with my constant bashing, I switched to the other end and it came out easier. After dressing the shaft it moves easily in the housing now.
Watch out for my upcoming thread on the conversion of my series 1 with BW12 to man o/d.
