Default Series 1 Subwoofer installation?

I thoroughly enjoy driving my Lumped series 1. However I have always installed and had decent stereos in my cars since High school days. I am now embarking on a audio installation in the XJ6.

I will be installing a component system and so I desire to have a subwoofer in the trunk. The problem is the series 1 has no path to get bass into cabin from the boot. My preference is to cut a hole behind the rear armrest as a pass-thru. This also keeps the installation more stealthy. Along those lines I am keeping the original head unit in the dash and installing a flip-out touch screen in center console. This will require me to fabricate a new sliding armrest to reveal the head unit/display. This part can be done without destroying anything. All original parts could be put back if desired.

Question; Has anyone done something like this? And if so, what did you do?

I normally resist cutting or changing originality on my cars unless doing so provides benefit to the driving experience/quality. I consider a good stereo with all the bells and whistles of Bluetooth and Apple Carplay a benefit so I am proceeding. I am willing to bet the metal behind the seat adds to structural integrity, but thinking a whole in center wont compromise it too much and I don't drive it like a sports car anyways.

Looking for ideas from someone whose has done this.

For the new owner, I put in the following speakers, tweeters and amp. The speaker box went up under the rear package tray in the trunk.

I cannot find the photos of the amp that was located on the rear floor under the package tray? Will keep looking and then edit. Power wires were run direct to the
battery terminals with special connectors.

Door speakers were upgraded as well.. it sounded find but was too much for my use... new owner listened to Jazz off USB drives. Had a Kenwood radio installed.

Was too busy trying to finish his desired upgrades to take complete photos..this will give you the idea!

Rodger,

Thanks for response, somehow I knew you (Lord of the Mods) would. So what about that cabin vent under rear deck? You just removed it? I forget what that's for?

Air extractor, it lets the Hot and Cold air out of the cabin..I just put a plastic bag over the outlet under the "hat" in the package tray... but I needed the room for the rear speakers in the other car '72 car. Not needed as you can let air out of the cabin with the windows..

"Lord of Mods"??, I just try to improve my older car all the time... I like the basic Jaguar stuff but some of the modern stuff is better to me...one day I will change the steering column to add tilt and then Cruise Control
with the new controls on the column. I have no more space for switches and controls without changing the looks. The choke knob controls air flow to the fascia and I have a Intermittent Wiper knob where the fog lights
would have gone. Extra switch on ski slope controls the inner lights in the front that are now Cibie Driving lights... High and Low are in the outer position. Inside the center console is the dual 2.1A USB charger...and on and on...

Found a picture of the amp and other speaker stuff installed.

Shows the tweeter in the drivers door panel with a S3 arm rest/door pocket.

On my 71 I fitted speakers in the rear package tray similar to Roger's. I have a rear evaporator which I hope to fit on my current 73, and it's vent system occupies much of that area. I took a chance, and fitted two speakers in the panel behind the seats--similar to what you propose but in the outboard panels (triangular, nearest the floor) shown in your photo. The panels are stiffened with plywood; the speakers are 8 inch but IRRC 10 inch would fit. They are woofers, not subwoofers, but the bass is not too bad, and it does transmit through the rear seat. That seat is from a S3 VDP, though, and it has a centre arm rest which is somewhat "open air."

I don't think there are structural issues, particularly since the sheetmetal can be reinforced with plywood. I suspect you could fit a true subwoofer in the centre location--rear or front facing. You would sacrifice the trunk space where the step in the floor is located--that step is made for a rear evaporator BTW, as was fitted in the 68-9 cars.

Roger, thanks for the pic's and nice install. This is my first attempt at a component system so I'm really just wingin it
here.

Robert, good information and suggestions. My plan right now is to cut open the sound deadener covering the four little holes in the steel behind the seats and if necessary open a new hole behind armrest. I will make efforts to seal the boot space and apply sound deadener for subwoofer in sealed box to sit under rear shelf. I've already installed the "Hertz" Mid-bass and tweeter up front. Try to get picsposted later. I'm waiting for internet deliveries of amp power wiring and back-up camera, etc.

Two 10" hi qts, high efficiency, free air subs in the rear deck. Doesn't take much power. Much love...
