Default Series 2 Dash Pad in Series 1

Slowly gathering parts for the eventual body / interior restoration (restomod) of my 1972 XJ6. The original dashpad is in just ok shape, far from the worst I've ever seen, but far from perfect. Series 1 dash pads seem to be unobtainium and I'm sure would be $$$$ if I could find one, so started wondering if one from a Series 2 would fit. I'm happy to report that the answer is a definite YES. The overall shape is a perfect match. The defroster vent openings are identical size and location and the Series 1 vents dropped right in. Obviously not "original" - it gets rid of the middle speaker grille (much cleaner look) and mounting is slightly different. Also, the underside front lip is a bit shorter on the Series 2, but it's long enough to reach the face of the dash and the difference won't be visible. Will probably need to work up a couple simple brackets for mounting screw locations under the front lip, but should be trivial effort.

Sun was in bad spot to get good pictures, maybe will try to snap a few better ones later.

Greg

Yep. My white '71 XJ6 got a similar makeover. I actually prefer the Series 2 dashpad because it doesn't have the tacky speaker grill in the middle.
